It's been 10 months - did the picture get posted?

They look great, and the "marine plywood" is a nice touch.

Beautiful cuttings. What is the size of the "canvas"?

You're right - the scrap pieces finish up real nice, too. Just need to figure out what they are...long fancy napkin rings?

This is from the Sue Mey design in Issue 49 of ScrollSaw Woodworking. I had a blank from the Wood Werx scrap pile that was 1.5" square, so I reduced the pattern to that size, and added 1/4" thickness to the base. It measures 5" tall and fits a 1.5" tea candle or LED candle on top.

I think the wood is rosewood, but maybe someone knows better. It was covered in wax, was very slow cutting, and the sawdust looked like red brick dust. It scorched some until I changed to a Seyco #423 blade - then it cut nicely, but the blade was harder to turn to meet the small pattern.

It is rubbed with BLO and looks like rosewood, with rich red that varies from dark rose to dark dark (probably some of that is scorching). If anyone has an opinion on the wood I'd appreciate the info.

Here's an alternate for the pattern.

Thanks for all the nice words. The new saw is a beauty - a Black and Gold EX-21. Still trying to get it in proper tune. The Tesla portrait is on 1/4" Oak to match an Einstein (from Steve Good) that I cut on my P-C.

Nikola Tesla was a contemporary, employee, and finally competitor to Tom Edison. Born in Serbia, his greatest intuitive leap was the alternating current induction motor (essentially all electric motors in your house before computer controls) and AC transformers (which enable step-up to high voltage for cross-country transmission, then step-down for residential use). As an employee of George Westinghouse, he was a key contributor to the Niagra Falls hydroelectric power plant near Buffalo, NY. He was a giant who died a pauper in New York City.

I agree that the picture is beautifully executed but it is not obvious that it is a portrait of Jesus. That doubt may hold back buyers who feel funny asking. Maybe put a title on it so it is not a question. It's also pretty big at 10"x12". Maybe a 5"x7" (13x18 cm) would be more marketable?

I'd set a price based on the time and material invested - if it takes 2 hours to cut a stack of 4, and the material cost you $20 for a 5x5 sheet of BB, then time is about $60 and material is about $4. Add $8 for blade a saw use: $72/4=$18 each. Increase it if you need more $$$/hour.

Add a frame at twice the cost to buy it (maybe add $20 to the sale price), and offer the portrait framed and unframed. They like a bargain.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

The Coffee Shop / Re: How I Got Started In the Hobby Of Scrolling

I was working on a contract that required building some electrical panels. Some of the connectors, lights, and buttons had odd shapes, and the punches for them are expensive (up to $125 each). I bought a Porter-Cable saw at Lowes and some metal cutting blades at Menards and cut the shapes in the Aluminum and Fiberglass panels using the manufacturer's outline drawings for the parts.

Then this Fall I saw ScrollSaw Woodworking magazine with some nice looking Christmas ornaments. I had a bunch of Cherry and Black Walnut from some trees that fell over the Summer. It makes good looking compound cuts. Then I tried some 1/4" Poplar and Oak from Lowes. Now, I am waiting for delivery of a new Black and Gold EX-21 from Seyco and enjoying the blog until it gets here. Lots of great projects and suggestions. Thanks to all.

Here's my first portrait - does it look like me?

Nice.
Did you consider mounting the saw by its table rather than by its feet?

Can I ask what you do where one rope crosses over another (see picture below)? The lines look less dark than the actual fret cut areas - are these lines scored with a knife, or sawn with something, or are the lines drawn on the wood to give the look of the rope passing under?

What did you use for the resin? I was looking at a can at AdvanceAuto, used for fiberglass repair, but I don't know how clear it would look.

It looks great. And it's a good size for a gift to someone.

I think you could replace the candle with a magnifying glass and have a nice table-top inspection unit. Maybe a couple of down-pointing LEDs and a button...   :P
