General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: saw speed
« on: September 20, 2010, 09:55:30 pm »
I have a Dewalt and I have never cut at full speed.  I only turned it that high to check for vibration, I was curious how it would do at that speed, and it did well.  For a beginner I always recommend they start slow to get their control down.  You can speed up as you progress and get the "feel" of your machine.  So many woods will burn if you cut them at a high speed, particularly cherry and oak.
I also adjust as I am cutting.  On a straight part I will speed up the machine and slow down around fretwork.

You have every reason to be proud of your lovely daughter.  How nice that you and she can share time together.  I hope to get my grandsons interested in scrolling (two year old twins) as soon as they show an interest.  Thanks for sharing.

I can relate and as Jimbo said the finer the blade the easier it is to do.  I got some jewelers blades from Mike for cutting stamp puzzles.  They are like a thick hair and really hard to tell if they or upside down.

Nice sign Paul!  Don't know about you but I have bifocals and seeing clearly is sometimes a struggle.   :)

Edward -

The tension handle on my Dewalt is pretty tight with hardly any movement.  I am certainly no expert but it would be worth a call to a service tech.  If you go online to Dewalt's wesite you could probably get the #.  It may be something easy that you can tighten yourself.  Good luck.

I vote for CA glue...It sure can fix some mistakes.  LOL  Barry try it you'll like it and they won't notice.

Thanks Dunk, I use CA a lot and it has saved me on a number of occasions from blowing a gasket!    :o

Hi Becky -

I use 1/8 BB to cut out the pattern and I stack cut 2 or 3.  The stack cutting gives it strength and gives you some extra portraits to give away, sell or keep.   I spray paint the backing, also 1/8 BB, with flat black paint.  I don't use a glass or plexi frame, it just gets dusty or smudged, you can just dust off the piece as (if) needed.  Also you don't get the glare from the glass.

If you use a store bought frame look for a portrait frame as opposed to a picture frame.  The difference is the portraits are deeper and can handle both pieces of BB.  I buy all my frames at Michaels, great selection and they often run good sales.  Don't cut your wood until you have the frame (I learned that the hard way)  :)

I use satin spray lacquer to finish most everything I make.

That is good to know Julief and I know what you mean about the straight lines.  :)

Thanks for responding Ron.  I am looking for something that is very specific with instructions for going from picture to completed pattern.  When I say I am intimidated by computers, I am not kidding.  Photoshop is probably a fine and versatile program but I really want something that does one thing, in this case scrollsaw patterns.  I know there is a learning curve and I don't expect to hit two buttons and be done (although it would be nice).

When I am forced to call IT people at work, it never fails, in trying to be helpful they give me too many options.  I just need one way of getting from point "A" to point "B".  When you ask a computer person, "What time is it?" they tell you how to build a clock.  ???

Thanks everyone for responding,
Barry
