Ask Steve a question. / Re: Inlay & stain

Hi Tommy, I seldom use stain so I'm not sure how well it will work. Just do a little experimenting first before you commit to the final project.

Hi Mytoya, there is also a Reader Gallery on the blog with several hundred pictures from all over the world. Look in the left hand column of the blog for the link.

Pattern Requests. / Re: Christmas pattern projects
« on: June 29, 2010, 05:58:08 pm »
Christmas ornaments sell well and you can stack cut them to reduce labor. I usually sold them in packs and individually. Baskets of all kinds sell okay. Clocks were always a tough sell for some reason. Nice boxes were okay sellers. Toys are okay but the new CPSIA(Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) has a big scare in the toy making business right now. Until that gets worked out I'm not sure I would spend much time making toys or any product intended for children. It's a shame really.

I DVR Pawn Stars. It's one of my favorite shows. Chumlee is a funny guy. How did you come to meet him.

Hi Judy, tough question. Let me play with it for a while and see what I can come up with.

Hi ReefDiver, I am in agreement with dgman. I would not install the stand on casters. The stand is already high and the additional instability would be a problem in my opinion.

Hi Gary, that is correct. It will not work with all printers. Sometimes you can get around the problem by changing the print mode in your print driver. It's a little geeky to explain but the printer needs to print to 600 dpi.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Your Hour Glass Pattern
« on: June 22, 2010, 06:45:06 pm »
Hi Danny, I don't understand the question. What wood cut-outs are you referring to. Do you mean you cut the pattern without having the hour glass insert? I had purchased the insert from http://www.nationalartcraft.com/ . They have discontinued the product. As pointed out in the other responses you can buy them from Rockler. Klockit also sells the hourglass inserts. I'm not sure the size will fit my pattern though.

Hi Ripchief. I would love to get the pattern library updated and add back links to the original posts. That would be very helpful for new readers. I have that on my to-do list. It also need to be organized in sections according to the type of pattern.

That is a good idea Charlie. At least that would help with my patterns. I'm trying to remember which versions of Windows will show thumbnails of .pdf files. I'll have to go back to XP and see if it works there.

Sorry Dunk, I need to rename this forum. It is impossible for me to read every post and respond to the 200+ email I get everyday. I'm glad my blog is growing but this is one of the down sides. I use to be able to answer every email. I started this forum so scrollers would have a place to get answers when I am not able to answer from other scrollers.  Thanks for being patient.

The pattern printer software was actually designed to just print one pattern per page. In a later version I added the ability to hit return and keep typing.

There is not a feature to determine the exact size except watching it on the virtual paper. I doubt there will be any feature updates to the program. One of these days I plan to just start over from scratch and build a more robust featured program. Time is the problem or I would have already started. There is a large demand out there that is untapped since WoodTrax died a few years ago. I have been gathering a list of all the feature requests I get and will try to add as many as possible.

Hi Jimbo, good tip about the position of the booth. I had not thought about that one. Makes good sense. $35 per purchase is really good.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Jig for Cutting a Perfect Circle?
« on: June 21, 2010, 10:01:40 pm »
Becky, the sanding jig is by far the best approach with the tools you have on hand. Also don't rule out that you can cut a very accurate circle with the scroll saw free hand. With a bit of practice you can keep a tolerance of +/- the width of the pattern line. From a few feet away it will look round. Give it a try you might surprise yourself.
