Excellent job Pete! The natural edge wood is a great touch.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: What type plywood should I use ??
« on: January 25, 2014, 08:43:36 am »
I bought some 1/4" cherry plywood with a veneer core and it cut beautifully. It was super easy and for a large pattern I only used one #1 blade. I think I could have stacked 4 of these and it would have still cut easily. There was no burning from the blade getting hot either. The plywood feels cheap but it looked good and cut like a dream. Since I plan on framing it, I think it will work just fine. If I could get this stuff in 1/8" I would.

I'm not sure if an MDF core is the same as the veneer core. Veneer core is made from wood particles but does not seem as dense as MDF.

Great choice of pattern, btw.

My understanding, and I'm no expert, is that if the card was purchased then you own it and may use it as you wish as long as you don't claim the artwork to be yours. So, I think it is OK to use. There are some great puzzle makers around and they may be better able to explain.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Cutting plastic
« on: January 20, 2014, 09:01:31 am »
Hi Jim. When the blade gets hot it transfers heat to the plastic causing it to melt. If you move the blade faster the plastic doesn't melt as much and you may be able to get a better cut. But, moving the blade faster doesn't always make the best cut. Try putting clear box tape over the pattern. It allows you to see the pattern and the make up of the tape also seems to lubricate the blade allowing it to run cooler. It works great for Plexiglass but I've never used it on a cutting board. If the tape works, you should be able to use a smaller blade and slow down your cut.

Let us know if this works for you.

Be safe Marg. I love hot weather but when it hits 100 F that's a little to hot to enjoy. I'll do a little rain dance for you and maybe you'll get some relief.

Well, only one way to find out how well it works...I have a dozen tea lights in the basement. Now I just need to find clay pots.
