General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hawk Belt Troubles
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:40:36 am »
I needed  replacement belts for my Hegner and it was VERY expensive.  I ordered a different belt on line and got twenty of them for about twice the price of a single Hegner.  I gave some away but still have a pile of them.  My point is:  there are many belts out there that will work.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dust Problem
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:36:23 am »
I have tried many ways to get that dust off of the pattern.  Original bellows blower, aquarium pump, compressed air from my shop compressor, shop vac, (killed three of those) and, dust collector hook up.  What I find woks the best is this fan setting beside me blowing the dust away. $50 at Lowes.

I have no problem feeling the direction of the teeth on FD Polar #5 blades.  I also use the FD ultra reverse blades with the "dimple" on the top.  When doing inlay work (I do not do fretwork) when the dimpled blades break and I need to insert a new blade into the unfinished cut the dimple restricts this. (My saws require a bottom feed) I have to hammer out that dimple before it will go into the cut.  The ultra reverse blades last longer than the polar blades for me but that dern dimple is a bother.

Brag Forum / Re: Walking cane with Inlay

I have sold two of these canes this week and I am working on making four more.  These four are made with oak as the long part and walnut for the gun/handle with curly maple inlay.  I will post a photo here when I get them finished.  Each time I make one I improve a bit on the process.

Thanks for all the kind comments.  I saw him today and he has had two people ask him where they could get one.  He gave them my card but I have not heard from them...yet.

Welcome:     I have made small airplanes as toys , but long before I had a scroll saw I made a bunch of radio controlled balsa planes.  I have attached a photo of a six inch long toy saber jet and the pattern I used to make a ten inch P-51.  Fun to do.

I have tried this with lettering but found my letters too fragile to survive a resaw.  I now stack cut them.  I do not do fretwork but I would guess that they would have the same limitation.  Yours worked out great!

I do lots of inlays like has been mentioned. (double bevel inlay).  I usually use 3/8" stock but when I do an inlay for a fireplace bellows I inlay 3/8" Maple into 3/4" cedar using the same blade and cut angle.  The front looks fine but the backs do not line up at all. The 3/8" inlaid wood is recessed in the back.  This does not matter for my bellows though.

Intarsia / Re: UK based - sanding advice
« on: August 13, 2014, 07:22:10 pm »
I do not use a sanding mop. (It sets in my drawer)  I shape the pieces with a pneumatic drum sander mounted in my drill press for shaping and a hand held sanding sponge for final sanding.

This is a 16" tall wall hung plaque, made to order. 3/8" Cedar and maple and lettering is Mesquite.  The angel was tricky to do but I did get it on the first try.  I put the lettering inside the smaller maple heart so that I did not have to swing the larger heart all around while doing the inlay of the letters.

Get togethers, shows and swap meets / Re: Square Credit Card Reader
« on: July 29, 2014, 08:07:47 pm »
I have a card reader I purchased through my bank. What I like about it is:
Wireless, immediately  prints a receipt for the customer and I have a signed copy. Customers name is on the receipt.  It settles at the end of the day and money is in my account in two days.  Less than 2% fee and is cheaper per month than a smart phone would be.  No signal problems.  I also use it for phone orders on long distance sales.  I just saw ,today, that Sam's Club now offers a similar device.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Breaking blades
« on: July 24, 2014, 09:17:06 pm »
I have a lot of experience with cutting 3/4" stock and find that I get in a hurry and push too hard and this is what breaks blades for me.  If I slow down a bit the blades last 3-4 times as long for me.  I keep the tension quite tight. (Ping)
