They wanted a easel to display the portrait on, so I modified Steve's Ipad stand, it worked well.Made out of 1/2" Maple and Oak.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Book Review...Simply Wood
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:00:41 pm »
by Roshaan Ganief

I ordered this book from Amazon and received it a couple days ago, I'm not one to review books very often, however I really like the patterns and style that Roshaan presents in her book and thought I would share it with you.

I have nothing to do with the Author and do not know her, I simply like her book. She has a unique style that is simple, clean and elegant which I find very attractive. Some of her patterns are very simple, some are more advanced, but even the advanced ones are not that difficult. I have not made any of her projects yet, but I plan to in the near future, time has been an issue for me lately.

My only beef with the book is that copying or scanning the patterns can be a challenge with out first cutting the page out of the book, which is something I'm not fond of doing. I wish there was a way to get her patterns digitally.

Overall, I feel the money spent was well worth it, and I can't wait to start turning her patterns into wood. Here's the link if you are interested.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: finishing

Dav, what type of wood are you working with, they all react a little differently. DGman is the expert on this type of stuff, but I do know you get different results from different types of wood. Some grains just show better then others once oiled, some species need to be enhanced to get the amount of "POP" you might desire. So if you can be a little more specific, it will help get a better answer.

Spraying lacquer on Oak, wont bring the grain out nearly as well as oiling it first will. Oiling a piece of Maple will not "Pop" the grain nearly as much as the oak does, regardless of oil or lacquer. So the type of wood you are using does have an effect on the type of finish you want to apply and the results you want from it.

As for using different oils to bring out the grain, oil is oil, they might have some different properties, but they all basically end up with a similar result looks wise.

Who ever did send you the pattern, knew the right person to send it too! As usual Al, simply beautiful! This one also tends to tug at the heart strings. Thanks for sharing it.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Poplar breaking my blades!!
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:40:09 am »
Hi Anne,

It's really hard to break a pinned blade, they typically are a size 7 or larger when compared to a flat blade, it sounds to me like you are simply pushing too hard and too fast. If the blade is bending to the back when you are cutting, slow down. If your arms, get tired or sore, your'e pushing to hard.

Scroll saws are about precision, not speed. Since your blades are breaking in the middle, you are putting to much stress on it as you feed it through, slow down and let the blade do the work, don't try to force it. As long as the blade goes up and down, it's not a saw issue, it's a user issue. Yes flat blades will work better for you for intricate work, but for cutting straight lines on a poplar leg, the blades you are using should perform fine.

Remember even pinned blades are small, and cannot be treated like a band saw or a table saw, you will get the hang of it with practice and you will begin to feel the amount of force needed to make your cuts.

Oh....and loose that hold down bracket, they are useless.
