Hi Judy, that is a very nice pattern. I would love to make you famous and publish that pattern for everyone on the blog to download.  ;D  The blog is read in over 100 countries and a pattern like that would be in the 5,000 download range easy. If you are into fame with no fortune send me an email. Nice job.

I love getting the email that show what everyone is doing. There are a lot of talented people out there. That was the first time I had heard from Jacobo. If you have ever tried a hand frame you know it takes a bit of practice to get up to speed. Once you get it down it actually goes faster than you would think.

Thanks Ron, My Ipad has been looking for a place to live. I had looked at the Moleskin cases but thought they were over priced. I think I'll have to give this a try. Good post.

Hi guys, it's a bit more complicated than it would seem at first glance. My host also offers unlimited storage and bandwidth but that's not the problem. When you buy server space you can buy shared or dedicated space. I am on a shared server which means exactly what it sounds like. There are other web sites hosted on that server. If I were to buy dedicated server space no one else would be competing for the speed and theoretically it would be faster. No guarantees.

There is more going on here than just the number of users online. All the messages on the forum are stored in a database. That is where the slow down is happening. Other things hosted on that server are still full speed. I have been trying to understand the details of optimizing the database for speed but this is getting pretty deep and I'm still trying to figure out what is possible and what is not. Allowing images to be uploaded apparently slows the database access. There are accelerators that can be installed to speed up the database etc. In other words there are many things to explore but they take time and knowledge. I don't mind spending the time but the knowledge is a problem. I have to research and teach myself as I go. I have had some help from a couple members here that are knowledgeable of the subject but I still have to figure out the details. Honestly I love doing this geek stuff. I like learning new stuff so I'm still hoping to make it better.

The option of buying dedicated server space is not an option at this point even with ads. The ads would not even come close to covering the cost. Out of the 15,000 to 20,000 readers of my blog only a little over 1000 use the forum. I'm not allowed by contract to say what the earnings are from my ads are but the few extra clicks I would get from the forum would be insignificant.  I am not against ads like they are on the blog but they actually slow things down and that's the last thing we need on the forum. It's just not worth it.

I really appreciate all of you being so patient. Forums are a little different than regular web sites. If a web site slows down you just stop going there and find someplace else. A forum is different because it is built by the users. You have an investment in time. You have met and become friends with other users. It's harder to just give that all away and move on.

Thank and feel assured I will keep trying to make it better if I can.

Hi Dav, I saw the files in the upload section but I did not see the post. Which forum sections to you create the post in?

Bulletins and News / Forum Speed Issues.
« on: August 14, 2010, 01:04:22 pm »
I have been working with my hosting provider to improve the speed issues with this forum. Unfortunately the results have been marginal at best. The problem is simply a matter of bandwidth from the shared server my site is hosted on. The solution is also simple. Buy dedicated server space. The bad news is that is very expensive.

Because I only pay for shared server space that means other sites are hosted there also. If the combined traffic from all these site gets to high then speed suffers. My site is one of the heavy traffic sites on that server so it looks like we get throttled first. That's fair because it is shared space and the other sites should not have to suffer. It's a money thing.

I will make some decisions on how to handle the problem pretty soon. The only things hosted on that server are this forum, the photo gallery and the scroll saw patterns for download. The main blog is hosted with Google and is not affected.

Sorry about the problems.

I'm still working on the issues. I am not certain at the moment what is going on but I suspect my hosting company has maxed out the server I'm on. Again, thanks for being patient.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Forum Speed Issues.

I have not done a very good job keeping up with the day to day posting on the forum. It seems there are several messages lately about the forum being slow. I just optimized the logs for better performance. Hopefully this will help improve things. It might also have been a server issue. I'm looking into that also. Thanks for being so patient. If you could reply here if you are still having issues. Thanks.

Hey Guys, sorry I have not been keeping up with what's happening on the forum. I did not realize there were speed issues. I'll check out the problem tomorrow and see if I can do something to make it better.

Ouch! I have to admit it's kind of funny but I would be swamped with hate mail if I did that pattern. Your on your own on this one. :)

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Scroll Saw and Glass
« on: July 22, 2010, 12:13:57 am »
Hi Jim, yes you can cut glass with a scroll saw. You need a water drip tank and diamond blades. I could probably find you a source for the blades if you like. They are very expensive. The drip tank can be home made. I know They use to make a drip tank for the Hawk but I'm not sure it is still available.

I just did a quick search and here is a source for the diamond blades. Looks like they are out of stock at this time however.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Video of Hi-speed Low Pass Flybys....

Great stuff GrayBeard. I was at an air show a few years ago when an f16 went vertical after a low flyby like in the video. He came down the runway at about 20 feet off the deck then right in front of us went vertical. Before you could catch your breath he disappeared. That was incredible then a Harrier jump jet hovered off the runway about 100 feet from us. The ground shook and you could feel the sound pressing on your chest. One of his thrusters burped and he had to do an emergency landing. He was a bit shook up when he got out.
