And while I am wishing does anyone need me to wish anything for them :)

Pattern Requests. / Re: Penguin Crossing needed!
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:22:52 pm »
Thanks Torsten and Paul.  I am the Postmaster in a small Southwest Virginia city.  Every month the art teacher from the local grade school brings me works from one of her classes.  It brightens the lobby up and the kids bring their parents and grandparents by to show off their art.  I am going to use Paul's pattern and put it inside of a yellow diamond shaped sign.  If I can figure out how to post a picture I will show the finished product on display.  Thanks again.

Pattern Requests. / Penguin Crossing needed!
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:00:05 pm »
I need some help in finding a pattern.  I have a display in the lobby of my office from a second grade art class.  It is watercolor penguins.  I have about 25 pictures.  I thought it would be cute if I could find a pattern of a penguin with the words "Penguin crossing" or something to that effect.  If anyone can help it is appreciated.

It was on the cover of SSW&C Issue 31 (Summer 2008).  Tom Stewart was the Grand Prize Winner 2007 with his "Art Ball Puzzle".  It is impressive and the article says that he used a router in a "machine" of his on creation to carve the outside and inside curves.

I just ordered and received the back issue assortment from SSW&C, this was one of the back issues.  I have spent the last few days going through the magazines and coming up with ideas on things to do.  They list an email address www.artspacelima.com for info.  The address is to an art display, of which the ball is a part, so I don't know if the address is still good.

Sloan's will not be selling hardwood anymore. Just what they have left.
Pat B

Wow Pat B!  I order most of my wood from Sloan's.  I had not heard that.  That is disappointing.

Has anyone ordered hardwood from Rockler?  I noticed they are advertising their hardwood on Steve's site.  I have ordered their box of assorted cutoffs.  It is a crap shoot, but I seem to use every piece eventually.

I just noticed your post bampasr.  Do you like Rockler for hardwood?

Ditto on the spray lacquer.  I used to use steel wool to smooth the piece before my last coat, but I find the brown paper bag does much better and it is definately cleaner.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: breaking blades
« on: December 06, 2010, 09:39:09 pm »
Pete -

I tend to break blades when I push the wood through too fast.  This may not be your problem but sometimes I have to remind my self to let the blade do the work and not try to rush.  It can be a real problem when you are stack cutting, your blade bends as you exert too much pressure and the lower pieces end up smaller than the top piece.

I also have a Dewalt and if I over tighten the blade it comes out looking like a hockey stick.  It doesn't usually cause the blade to break however.

I like your work.  You did a nice job with the wood variety and the layers give it depth.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone for the help.  I thought maybe 1/8" was the thinnest ply available.  I will have to search a little closer.  I will try sloans and wildwood design.
