Very beautiful.  You mention they are 6" tall. What were the other two dimensions?  Brian

Yes - very good cutting & I also like the bottom, more solid backing. Brian

Just had to make this "easy" looking project of Steve's.  Because I'm not as accomplished a cutter as I thought, I spent way more time sanding the three layers than I'd like to admit to. But it was fun.  Thanks for looking.  Brian

Charles - I've noticed in your gallery of projects two things.  First you don't use paper pattern glued to your blank. Do you hand draw each & why?  Secondly, one close up shot showed what looked like a spiral blade. Is that the blade of choice for your fine work? You've developed a lot of tricks & techniques that will take years of designer firewood on my part.  Thanks for sharing. Brian

Fun puzzle to make. Made one two summers ago. Put on a horse in the yard to spray finish. Blew Jonah into the grass never to be found. Made two more Jonahs.  Let a friend at work take it home to show her girls.  They dropped Jonah and now he resides in the belle of their dog who scarfed him up.  My whale still needs a Jonah.  :(

Charles - love the "in progress" JW.  Wish I could cut portraits like you do.  But always seem to cut the wrong parts out first.  Your 2 photos show a little of your cutting progression.  Maybe you could show us newbies a few more in progress photos to show your technique, with this or future projects.  Thanks for showing us your remarkable workmanship.  Brian

Got my lifter for Christmas. It is amazing how such a simple devise can make scrolling more enjoyable.

I've had pretty good luck with Silicone adhesive. Because it is thicker than most viscus glues it fills into any size pores on either material and gives a good surface/glue contact. Plus I haven't found a finish sealer silicone will dissolve - yet.  I'm also to cheap to buy epoxy for the little I would use.  Once open it's shelf life is short compared to a small tube of silicone. I don't like mixing A & B or the smell. But I do use spray mount for my patterns - that smell or "mess" doesn't bother me. To each are own. :)

A scroller friend told me the best kind of wood to scroll is free or cheap. Way back when the English apprentice cabinet makers would go through alleys and pick up discarded furniture. Take in home take them apart. Even de-laminate the veneers and build something with what they had just to learn their craft. Of course, furniture then was solid wood. But why not experiment. Because door skins are so thin you may try gluing up two or three layers [back to back or in odd count like plywood is glued up i.e. 3-5-7-9-11 plys.] As for the flaking, try using a single top layer w/pattern stacked on your good piece.  Personally I wouldn't try a project requiring spiral blades or patterns with a lot of close cuts. Remember - this is the fun part of this hobby - and we ALL make designer firewood at times.

Brag Forum / Valentine for my bride

Now that Christmas is over I found this years project for Valentines Day in Feb. '14 Creative Woodworks.  Again, another Sue Mey design.
When it comes to Valentines i seem to pick a design by Sue Mey.  I reduced the size by 5% to fit a piece of Alder I had and finished it with Butcher Block Oil.  I also drilled a hole in the back if she wants to hang it up.  Thanks for looking.  Brian

Overfifty - take The Milster's advice. I had your same problem 'til last night. I put Steve program on my desk top for easy access. i also found it best to make the "thumb nail" copy before writing your blog/post.  Good luck.   Brian
