General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Polyurethane or Lacquer
« on: November 01, 2011, 12:48:26 am »
Spray lacquer, mainly because it dries so fast and I can finish projects a lot quicker.

On my ornaments this year, all I am doing is soaking them in Watco (natural) for 15 or 20 minutes and then hanging them up to dry.

Thanks Torsten - nice video.  That process could make some unique gifts from special pictures.  I go to Michael's a lot and will give it a try.  I also like videos that recommend or name a particular product.  Lots of folks won't mention a product because it is not fair to other similar products.  But when I am trying something for the first time it is nice to go shopping for a particular item.  Later I can substitute generic products if I want.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: My Blade Experiment....
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:38:16 pm »
I use Flying Dutchmen blades 80% of the time.  I hardly ever go above a #5 and use mainly the SR blades.  When I do go larger I use the #7 or #9 PGT from Olsen.  The wider kerf is great for children's puzzles and the Olsen blades handle 1" or above wood the best for me.

Both are excellent blades.  However, in my opinion, you cannot beat the control you get with the FD's and nothing goes through wood like a new FD.

Barry

PS:  I have never used any other brands of blades.

I have a request from a family member for an ornament shaped like a puppy or a kitten angel.  Does anyone have these or know where I could purchase them?

Thanks for any help,

Red -

I am a recently retired Postmaster in a small town in SW Virginia.  Lot's of folks used to come in to weigh their cars on my scales.  It always seemed that the Dad's were more excited about the project than the kids :)  Scouting is a great organization and spending quality time with your son is such a blessing.  Have fun and enjoy.

I cut a number of those puzzles last year and gave them away as  Christmas presents.  I used 1/4" BB, tried 1/8" BB, but the thicker pieces are easier for kids to handle and more durable.  I painted with acrylics and finished with spray lacquer.  As long as you let the finish cure, no more smell, any finish bought in the US is non toxic.

I stacked cut three pieces at a time and used a #5 SR FD.  You could use a #3 but the larger blade makes the puzzle easier to fit together. (wider kerf)

Good question Bampa!  Thank you Dan for the tip on where to order.  I am going to put that website on my favorites right now.  This is why I get on this workshop community :)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Sloan's Plywood
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:06:05 pm »
Hi Bob -

The hardwood ply from Sloan's is excellent.  I have used it mainly for backing, it looks really good when doing some of Sue Mey's crosses and plaques, with BB ply.

The hardwood ply tends to tear out when used for cutting.  In those cases actual hardwood is best.  As dgman said, a planer is great to have.

Sloan's is a good product at a good price.  Great service as well.  You can't go wrong with them.
