I would second the idea of epoxy and a clean, oil free surface.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Best Band saw

Many manufacturers of 14" bandsaws make a 6 inch riser to fit the saw.  You simply dismount the upper half of the frame, insert the riser, remount the upper portion, and tighten the bolts.  It extends the resawing ability of the saw by 6 inches.  Bear in mind that you need an appropriately sized motor to handle cuts this deep.  I have resawed boards up to about 10 inches wide on my Jet 14".  Of course all your old blades are useless at that point.  A 14 inch saw usually takes a 94 inch blade but with the riser takes a 105 inch blade.  BTW: that's why 105 inch blades are so common.

Keep your eye open on Craigslist for a used Jet 14".  That's what I did.  Later I added a riser so I can resaw up to almost 12 inches, and then put in guides and some other accessories from Carter.  Like with a scrollsaw, buy the best blades you can find, they are worth the difference.  I also recommend searching youtube for the Alex Snodgrass video on setting up a bandsaw.  He travels all over for Carter during the Woodworking shows, and is a wizard with a bandsaw.  His method of setup is unbeatable in my book.

Fire is something we all fear!  What a nightmare.  Glad you are OK.

I had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get one because they were having difficulty obtaining a major part.  I finally found one on ebay and sent it to Frank and he made me one.  I installed it, but never really got accustomed to it.  I thought it would speed up blade changes, but I eventually went back to the original clamps.  It was likely a case of pilot error because most people I have spoken with love them.  Mine is sitting in a baggie on my saw.

The tablesaw is the heart of any wood shop.  If you look on Craigslist you can find excellent saws in your price range.  I bought a Delta Unisaw for $350 a few years ago.  Right now I am aware of a guy in my neighborhood with 3 Jet tablesaws for sale at great prices.  The accuracy and stability of a really good saw will spoil you.  Like others have said, setup is critical but not difficult.  On a good saw the setup doesn't have to be repeated often either.

I'm with you Russ.  My biggest concern with the weather today is that it would not be a great day to take the boat out.

I would join you if I could.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using "Painters Tape" --OR NOT-- :+}

I use the full size sheets or print the pattern on normal paper, spray glue and attach, then cover with clear packing tape.  I use the packing tape regardless.  Use the full sheets whenever practical.

Got your card yesterday Judy, Thanks!  Take your saw in and just start working.  If they confront you, just remember it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: I have found a couple saws on CL

No need to apologize.  You haven't done anything wrong!  We are here to ask and answer questions and share our interests, and that is just what you are doing.  I have only used the RBI's but I know Excalibur is an excellent saw also.  I have no hesitancy in backing the RBI's.  I would look at the age and size of the saws and what you feel more comfortable with.  Both are still made and parts are available if they aren't too old.  Condition is an important factor.  Good luck.

As another suggestion, go to lumberjocks.com where Sheila Landry has a class on scrolling that will walk you through the basics and into more advanced practices.  And it's  free.
