Yes I have gone through the side and bottom, you use calipers for the sides and a ruler to measure the depth

The Coffee Shop / Vase for Boxmaker

Hi Mark more info on vase making, the photos are probably out of sequence but you should be able to follow
there is one of my lathe showing the 4 jaw chuck to hold the wood on the lathe, next is the peice of wood I started with [a tree I cut out of my back yard] next is the hollowing tools, these are woodcut and made in NZ, the best in my opinion is the Rolly Munroe also made in NZ, these tool are for hollowing out the centre of the vase other tools are used for the out side, the next is the vase hollowed out abd ready for sanding and embelishment.
It is rather scary putting the log on the lathe at first, everything has to be tight and that has to be checked all the the time as if you do not you wear it.
One other thing the hollowing tools are expensive, one of those with handle is around $200nz

Times sure do change, do you remember the milk cart drawn by a horse, do you remember the night cart that used take away our [you know what] and do you the remember the movies, tarzan. superman, batman, tom mix, hopalong, gene autrey, and all the other good things that made us healthy. unfortunatley a lot of young people did not make it because we did not have the medicine we have today, diabetes,tb, cancer and the like, but at least there was no drugs and the like, and hard times hurt no one

You turn the outside first to the desired shape then start hollowing, [not that simple], you have a special hollowing tool as it is end grain that is being cut. I have included a pic [sorry it is side ways] this vase is about 9" tall and 5" dia.
It is best to use green wood as it cuts a lot easier
