General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Recommendations for a band saw
« on: April 06, 2012, 08:48:58 pm »
Danny,
I do believe that the riser blocks are available only on the larger bandsaws as the smaller bandsaws would be under powered to resaw anything over whatever the height capacity is of the saw.
As to the blade running on the front of one tire and the rear of the other, it sounds like the tire wheels are not aligned with on another (not coplaner). If you can get the blade to run consistent and track correctly the way it is, ( without the blade sliding off the wheel) you can shim one of the wheels to line them up.
I have a Grizzly G0555. The manual that came with it explains how to do it and check it. You may wish to download the manual for one of the Grizzly saws, as after the instructions for saw assembly and setup, it has a lot of good tips and troubleshooting for bandsaws in general.

Katie,
I also use the Dremel plunge Router base. Got it about 3 years ago and haven't bothered using the drill press since. If you go with the Dremel just make sure you have a variable chuck so you can use any size drill bit.
Gabby, your idea would work except you would have a hard time with alignment when you need precision in locating your hole.

GB,
Thanks for the tip. Good deal. Added bonus is I have an electric hand belt sander that uses the same size belts.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Corian
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:47:23 am »
Termite,
I haven't cut any corian on the scroll saw but have made pens from it. I sawed it using a band saw or table saw.
Follow what FD Mike and others said in regards to cutting. As far as gluing you can use Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) to glue it to itself. There are 3 consistencies, thin, medium and thick. Thin is what comes in the little tubes. You should use the thick or medium when gluing. If you want to glue to a wood surface I would seal the wood with a layer of glue first before gluing together. The cyanoacrylate will soak into the wood and not bond well otherwise.

To get an easy black and white page to cut and paste, just click on the print button on the bottom of the postings.
A page will come up that you can copy and paste without any background or anything.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Mike's Workshop
« on: March 28, 2011, 09:53:01 pm »
Just to let you all know that Mike from Mike's Workshop (Flying Dutchman blades) will be having hip replacement surgery in May.

He probably will be laid up recovering for a couple of weeks, so if you need to order blades, you should do so in the next few weeks.

He is also contemplating selling his business, but after talking to him the other day, and seeing a post from him on another forum, I don't think that is imminent, unless a great offer comes up. He still loves what he is doing even though he devotes 7 days a week to it.

When I talked to him, he was concerned that him not being able to fill orders during his recovery time would alienate his customers. I told him that I was sure that virtually all his customers would understand.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Lemon Oil

I use Scott's Liquid Gold which is virtually the same as a lemon oil. Used in the same way.
Pops the grain of the wood. Just be sure you let any oil you use to dry thoroughly before top coating with anything. I usually air dry a minimum of a couple days before any top coating, if I use a top coat at all.

One other source for clock inserts is http://www.woodworkingparts.com/
They run around $7 and all in this size range use "N" size batteries.

Bill is right. Mine does this occasionally when it is cool in the shop. (below 55?) A good rap on the motor housing with a soft piece of wood or rubber mallet gets it going again.
I have a foot switch with the saw switch covered in plastic to keep out the dust so that isn't a problem.

Janet,
Check out Ebay. I have purchased some Corian pieces from a couple of people off Ebay at reasonable prices for making pens.

Be careful putting a variable control on your saw.
Generally, if the saw motor uses brushes, you can use a control. if it does not have brushes, a rheostat type speed control could ruin the motor.

Not worth the money unless you get it free.
Use mine with an old drill press if I need a little light there.
I have a couple of floor standing daylight reading lamps with one on either side of the table along with a three tube fluorescent overhead. I like to see what I am cutting without shadows ;D
