Use a number 1 or 3 blade.  The lower the better especially on 1/2 or thinner stock.  Flying Dutchman or fd blades are the best.  I use FD-3 Polar the most.  You can get a trial pack from Mike @ www.mikesworkshop.com or give him a call at 1-605-582-6732.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: blade storage?
« on: November 17, 2010, 03:07:58 pm »
I had purchased some tubes that were plastic from Wildwood Designs that Steve recommended for a bud vase project he did in June 2010.  They cost 45 cents each and worked well for the project.  I had ordered extra because they were so cheap.  I found them to work great for storing blades in.  I get mine from Mike and the label he provides fit in the tubes and work great for labels.  I made a stand and use old wine corks for tops.  Great set up cheap.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dewalt saw purchase - Yes or No?

I did not need a scroll saw either but as I watched Craigs List I saw one for sale with no price other than it was new in the box with a stand.  Never used.  No lowball offers accepted so I waited three weeks and it was still for sale so I offered the person 250 dollars (1/2 Price).  I got it and it was brand new in the box from woodcraft with a new stand also from woodcraft.  After cleaning all the oil off and setting it up I can not believe how nice it cuts compared to the Porter Cable I been learning on.

I was lucky and visited a Black and Decker outlet shop that was going out of business.  They were liquidating there 40 dollar orbital 1/4 sheet sanders for 9.99 each.  I bought four and use them all the time will 100 grit, 150 grit, 220 grit, and a spare.  This lets me be able to finish projects without changing sandpaper.

if you are looking for a cheaper one, Michaels had them for 19.99 and you can use a coupon for 40 or 50 percent off.  This does not attach as sturdy as the one at woodcraft for I have both.  The one from woodcraft was about 40 dollars and is a better model.  However what I did was put a board between my stand and saw.  This board creates a shelf and I attached the light to the board.  I also clamped the light to the saw with a regular straight wood clamp with a piece of 2 by 4 spacer.  This gives great stability for the light and it does not vibrate.  With the cheaper model I clamped it to a bench next to my Dremel so there is no vibration.  You need to play around a little and you can eliminate any vibration and make it work.

I have had this saw for nine months with no problem.  One thing I picked up was an air blower for a 50 gallon aquarium to blow the dust away better.  The light bulb will burn out and be hard to find a replacement bulb.  Instead, I got a light and magnifying glass combo which most people use.  Good luck.  If you get into scrolling seriously you will then pick up a second saw like the Dewalt and notice the difference in performance.  It is like buying a car you get what you pay for ie luxury or practical.  You have practical that will work but the Dewalt will make the ride much smoother and easier.  I just got a Dewalt but still use both.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Favorite Blade to Use
« on: July 30, 2010, 11:14:47 am »
We all must have a favorite blade to use.  I like the Flying Dutchman Polar No. 3.  This is because it easily cuts 1/2 inch or thinner wood both soft and hard.  It makes a great straight line and square turns.  It is thin so it works well in tight quarters for precision cuts.
I am curious what other people rate as their favorite.

I use it on carpet stains made by mascara in my daughters room first.  Then use carpet cleaner to get the residue out.  Also great for putting on golf grips.
