Hey Danny, try not to get to bummed out over it.  I know it is discouraging to do all that work and get lots of compliments (which is always nice to hear!) but no sales.  I'm beginning to think it's the year.  I had my second show on Saturday and cleared $68.00.  My first show went in the hole $80....now that's really not good!  Both shows people are just not buying.  If anything they're picking up small ticket items.  I have 3 more shows coming up...it can only get better!  :D  One thing I'm not doing is lowering my prices....I figure people don't work for nothing and neither do I.  The right person will come along I just have to wait for them and if it doesn't happen this year then I'm already for next year!!  ;D

Pumpkin logs sound good....

Memphis hardwood, www.memphishardwoodlumber.com is another great supplier for any size lumber.   I buy 1/8" most of my 1/4" and oak ply from them.

I too use Danish oil - natural.  I pour mine in foil pan (from dollar store) dip project making sure all cuts have been covered, drip off, place on cardboard and then wipe off placing on clean cardboard to dry.  I let the piece(s) dry for 24 hours then apply top coat of lacquer - usually about 3 coats.  I like the lacquer as it dries very quickly - 3 coats within 1/2 hour.  Depending on the project I sometimes will use poly.

Hey Dan, I had read in many postings about the Deft product that you use, and I'm always trying different products, so when I was in the States this summer I picked up some (can't buy it here).  I found it to be blotchy when dried - almost like some of the piece didn't get any on it.  So the next coat I checked and made sure that everything was covered and same thing.  I found it took about 4 coats to look good.  Do you notice this?  Maybe I just got a bad batch.   :-\

I use 1/8" oak ply and stack cut 4-5 and use Olsen 2/OR.  I have some spiral blades but haven't tried them yet...it's to find the time to have a practise day!

« on: October 02, 2012, 08:34:25 pm »
I just had my first 3 day show ever last weekend and only made $353.  After expenses (booth & hotel) running on the negative side....now that's not good!  Was hoping to do really well at the show and was getting a little discouraged but after talking to other vendors a lot weren't doing well....lots of people thru but just not buying.  Heard some customers say that it was to early to Christmas shop so that could have something to do with it.  I did feel better hearing that I wasn't the only one not doing well.  But aside from sales not being great I had a good time.  Chatted with the vendors around me and had a lot of laughs plus it was a weekend away...so not all was lost.  ;D

Very nice.  I'm also a quilter and have some quilting friends who will like this so I've snagged a copy.  Thanks!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Which Ornaments Sell Best?
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:50:37 pm »
I sell my ornaments for $4 and make a little of everything and use only hardwood (maple and red oak) finished with varnish.  I don't offer deals as ornaments are a good seller for me....I've had people buy 5-7 at a time which is pretty exciting to me.

I too make the bird houses and also make the Angels by Diana.  Both are fun to make and so cute finished.  I don't use a jig.  I had tried using clamps as Diana suggests but I find I have better control if I just hold it with my hands.

Hey Dan, just wondering what kind of wood you use?  Most of what I use is hardwood, but have used western red cedar which certainly cuts a lot faster than hardwood.  Where do you buy the small screw hooks?  The company I was getting them from can no longer get them.  Went to place an order on Friday and found out....not good timing.  I'm almost out of hooks and have a big show in a couple weeks!

You rock Russ!!  Woo hoo....you tell 'em   ;D

I think I've only ordered from them once about 3 years ago, the catalogue I have is old and I have a vague idea where it is but be sure when I find it, it'll be filed....maybe I'll take it to work and shred it!  ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Covering power tools in the shop
« on: September 04, 2012, 08:20:59 pm »
I cover the scrollsaw with a breathable cover I bought at Woodcraft.  My saw is in the garage and in the winter we heat with a woodstove and the saw is setup close to the stove, the cover helps keep any soot off.  I vaccum and wipe off the table before covering.
