Remebered this post when I was in Menards tonight and they also have 75% off the 3M brands of sanding discs/belts.  Have to go check my belt and stationary sanders and go get some!!  (Quincy, IL if anyone is close)

Very Nice Dennis, like the way it contrasts with the backing.  Did you make the frame as well?  Thanks for sharing!

Made this for a friend who owns a local restaurant...

block of wood is Curly Claro Walnut (has some excellent waves in it 8)) I can't remember for sure what the open/closed insert was, but I want to say Canary wood?  Address plate is cut from brass sheet and had it engraved at a local place in the mall.  The little crystals around the clock are hot fix Swarovski (clear) and the center of the clock is a hard drive platter with the roman numerals engraved by me.

Back has a custom made cover from regular walnut with 4 magnets in the corners over the corresponding screws to hold it on.  the "Thank You, Please come again" is cut from .050 PPW (pre-painted white) aluminum.  Hanging eyes are solid brass and had a black chain to hang it on.

Stop and think about 'trophies' and you will seldom see a copper plate on a trophy made of wood. Almost always 'brass' finish.

~~~GB~~~
But I am cutting the letters out individually, so won't be a "plate" with engraving, but you are right, never seen any with copper plates.
Sheila...that's what I use for the majority of my patterns as well...stick it in the printer, print it out and cut around them.  But I have all my patterns on the computer as well.
Here are some hands that I made for a clock, they are very thin brass that I sandwiched between 2 pieces of 1/8 plywood to cut.  Still was a little tricky....longest hand is about 11"
