Ask Steve a question. / Re: Cutting table cleaner

I read a tip recently about using a scotchbrite pad under a random orbit sander to clean saw tables.  Sound logical to me.

I have used clear acrylic sheets (like plexiglass).  They can be cut on the scrollsaw if you slow the speed down.  You can also buy spray cans of frosting material if you want diffusion.

GB, I have "restored" a number of pieces over the years without sanding and ruining the patina.  It doesn't always work, but I pour lacquer thinner in a small metal tray and dip #0000 steel wool into it and rub it over & over the finish.  Lacquer thinner will dissolve most film finishes without totally removing them.  You can still spot sand any really rough spots and then blend them in by using the lacquer thinner and steel wool method and feathering in the old finish.  When you get the results you are looking for, consider a couple of coats of polyurethane as a top coat and to prevent future damage from water and/or alcohol.  Try it on the underside of the table top to see if it gives you what you want without making it look "new".

It's all a matter of perspective.  A fellow from our local woodworker's guild spent 10 years off and on scrolling the Declaration of Independence.  http://www.leaderherald.com/page/content.detail/id/523775.html?nav=5011  this is a link to the newspaper article from his home town regarding his project.  I bet that makes your project seem a little less daunting.  Do a little at a time and you will surprise yourself when it is done.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Where can I buy Key Chains?
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:35:37 pm »
Home Depot and Lowes sell them in the lighting department as pull chains for ceiling fans.  You can buy them cheap and they also sell the links.  You can cut them to whatever size you like.

HI Karl, and welcome from St Pete!  We drive past Naples all the time on the way to visit our Sons & family in Corral Springs.

I have used the flocking from www.donjer.com/ on several different projects.  You paint on the adhesive (I use an acid brush) then "spray" the flocking in with a cardboard tube sprayer like the old pest control dusters, and leave it to dry overnight.  Turn it over and tap out the excess (save it for the next project) and you are done.  Looks great and easy to use.  I just buy it at the local Woodcraft store.  I've been very happy with it.  Especially for band saw boxes.

I never put the blade in upside down, but on occasion I have noticed the saw needed to be rotated in relation to the blade.  I couldn't count the number of "dumb" mistakes over the years.

Janet-my wife had something similar once that turned out to be a rose thorn which had become infested in her knuckle.  Turned out fine.  Good luck!

Thanks Judy

What they said!  I'd rather do something unique to give, but I'd be happy with receiving about anything.  It's more about the giving than the receiving.  That's the idea behind the Holiday anyway.

Those are all really cool!  My grandkids are too old for them, but they may get them anyway.  They have enjoyed the boomerangs and rubber band guns I have made them.

I use dye intended for coloring cake iceing.  You can thin it in alcohol so it doesn't raise the grain and paint it on.  Any clear finish you want over top.  I used it on some of Steve's gumball machines last November and they still look new.  It is cheap and available at almost any craft store.

Pattern Requests. / Re: Carriage clock

I'm building a tambour clock like this Janet.  Only the front will hinge down to leave a space for a home defense weapon.  I know it isn't a carriage clock, but I like the design.

Got mine at Woodcraft!  I check that the table is square to the blade often.
