Don;

     Good thought about the box .  I will run that by them.

Not interested in a CNC machine.
     I figure I can stack cut these and make about ten per hour plus drying time for the finish.

Still figuring out exactly what is needed, but this is one idea.

      I am making a few different items for consideration by a customer for five hundred Christmas gifts for a large organization, to give out to donors, I think.   About five inches tall.  Painted star and stained cedar.  Hope this works out.  It is a work in progress but just in the planning stage so far. If this works out it will keep me busy throughout the summer I bet.

You could also try masking and flocking the surface.

Gordster;

This is how I finish the out side of all my boxes including these band saw boxes:

     I shape and sand the box to 120 grit with a hand held random orbital sander.
I then brush on a lacquer based sanding sealer.  Lacquer or shellac also work well. Next day, I sand it all down with 170 grit. Tack clean with a cloth, damp with mineral sprits. Allow to dry an hour. I then use a finish from Rustolium rattle can I get at Lowes or Walmart for about $3.75 a can.  It is called "clear finish"  I use the gloss but they also offer a satin finish.  One can will finish at least five boxes or more, giving them four or five coats each.  Sometimes I apply paste wax a day or two later.  This does not change the shine much but makes the box feel smoother to the touch.

Here is my latest band saw box I made for a gift.  Patterned after Texas Tech. logo.  Eastern red cedar 14" tall.

I re-size my patterns in "Paint," found already installed, on my computer.  Works well for me.

This is the video to watch to learn how to set up a band saw and how to make a band saw box.  This guy is good.

Thank you for the kind words.

This is what used to be called a "Jig Saw" back in the fifties.   I used one in Jr High school shop class. It has a spring return, on the blade, so the amount of tension that can be applied to the blade is restricted.  Our modern thin blades require more tension than that saw (in my opinion) can deliver.

If by "normal scrolling" you mean fretwork......I do not know. I have never tried fretwork.

Danny:

    Thanks for your kind words,

 Cedar especially, absorbs finish a lot so this is how I finish it.

      After sanding well,  I brush on a sanding sealer.  Lacquer or shellac also work for this but sanding sealer is a little cheaper here. After it dries overnight,  I sand it smooth using 180 grit in my random orbital sander.  I then spray on Rustolium clear finish from their rattle can that I get at Lowes or Walmart.  One $3.58 can will finish about five of these boxes applying 3-5 coats.  Hardwood takes less finish to get a nice shine,  but requires more time spent sanding.
     I sometimes then apply a paste wax to make it feel smoother.

I also expect the Texas Flag box to sell well, so I made four of them.  I will find out Saturday, my first sale of the year.  Thanks for the kind words folks.

I have sprayed Deft in the past but I find Rustolium clear finish works just as well, and is cheaper.  I get it at Lowes or Walmart.

Look at the "Alex Snodgrass" video on band saws.  He explains how to set one up and adjust it.
