Ask Steve a question. / Skill Level Required for Octagon Bowl
« on: December 31, 2018, 11:05:33 am »
Wow Steve - you are correct this project is beyond the skill level of any project that I recall seeing on the blog.  I have built an octagon shaped box - with much frustration.  It sits in my shop as a unique item - not a piece of beauty in the house.  I did not have an electronic angle gauge and the accuracy of the measurement of 1/2 degree on the average plastic protractor is suspect.  I hope that I am wrong and there are many who will build this project successfully as it a pretty piece.   Regards > Gary Cooke in Cypress, Texas

Perhaps you should try a non spiral, straight, blade and or a spiral blade with flat ends to facilitate clamping to see if your early blade breaking problem is solved.  Flying Dutchman makes many blades types such as these.  A supplier that I use is mikesworkshop.com

Norm, thanks for posting that qualification on rate of exchange.  If we don't deal with it all of the time - we forget that it is an issue.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Rift Sawn Redwood
« on: November 26, 2018, 11:10:07 am »
I recently cut a piece of rift sawn Redwood, which was 1/2" thick using Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #5 and #3 blades.  I chose this wood for the straight grain that is presented there.  I was quite surprised at how hard this was to cut, dulling blades very fast.  I was wondering if scrolling thru the rift cut vs normal cut Redwood was what created this difficulty.  Does anyone have experience cutting this wood and was your experience like mine?  Perhaps the wood that I was using was really Petrified Rift Cut Redwood.

Do unto  others...........  Always works.

Curious, what was the type of wood and finish on the beer tote in your picture?  That should have been an eye catcher!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Cutting Plexiglass
« on: October 22, 2018, 10:00:07 am »
I typically cut with the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blades for Hardwood and Baltic Birch.  They serve me well in these applications.  Last Christmas I cut a few things in Plexiglas and used these blades and experienced the overheating kerf weld up issue.  Very aggravating!  As others suggested - research for blades designed for use on Plexiglas and try those.  Regards, GLC in Cypress, Texas
