General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Where Do The Shavings Go?
« on: August 02, 2010, 08:35:01 pm »
Well Russ, I must agree with Dunk.
Not only walnut but, there are alot of woods that are not good for gardens or ground cover.
This subject came up on another wood working fourm and the general  thought was, "Trash it or burn it but, it wont help to retain the moisture to help the garden and it can harm alot of plants."
You are right about "Treated wood, "Don't even burn it!".
There have been cases where walnut and others have been used for bedding for horses and other animals and they have died from it.
My wife buys cider chips to put around the trees and in her flower garden and it does help to keep the weeds down but, I dont see any reason to toss it on a garden or flower plot.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: ScrollSaw Business Card
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:53:49 pm »
My daughter makes my cards on her 'puter. She used some pictures of my work and just added my name and phone number.
Guess you could take a picture of your saw, reduce it down to icon size and add your info and print (I think she gets 24 cards per page) on heavier card stock any amount you want fairly cheap.

I would agree that crosses should do well but, you might also consider Christmas and Easter themes for the Church sale.
I would think that word art of old quotes for the old age home might bring back some memories for those folks. And would be easy to hang on the walls of the rooms.

You really do a nice job with this pattern Roger.

Is the JE and US glued on?

Thank you for the nice comment.
No, it is all cut from one piece of wood. I have had only one break from being dropped on a concrete floor. I did re-glue that one.

I've made alot of them out of all kinds of wood including 4 out of 3/4" Bloodwood.
I even made some small enough for necklasses.

And that doesn't include the four foot tall music stand. But I got $100.00 for that project.  ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: when teaching someone to scroll...
« on: August 01, 2010, 12:39:50 pm »
I am pretty much self taught. I bought a scroll saw and a magazine and this was my first project. Practiced on a piece of scrap wood and then found this pattern in the magazine and cut it out of 3/4" plywood and backed it up with painted 1/4" ply.
It was about ten years ago and was cut on my old Tradesman saw.

A friend of mine now owns this cutting.

Thanks everyone.  Roger, I'm going to give em a try as soon as I can get caught up.

BTW I sold em both to day at the saturday market do i owe you a royalty?   :+)

Heck yes, I need 50%!  ;D
Just kidding.  ;) ;D
By the way, if you don't mind my asking, what did thy sell for? I got $15.00  a piece for them. (Well, for the ones I didn't give away to relatives anyway.)

Started with a "Tradesman" from Ace Hardwear for $100.00. It was a pin-end only saw.
Then moved up to a Dremel and thought that I had died and gone to heaven. It was $200.00.
Then I discovered Steves blog (he uses a DeWalt) and someone else suggested I would like the DeWalt also, so I got one for $450.00.
Right now I would say that I'm as happay a clam and have no reason to covet any other saw.
That may change without notice but, I'm happy for now!
(All that was over a period of 10 years I think.)

I have used an old pencil sharpner to get the sharp corner/edge knocked down real fast and then using a stationary sander to smooth the dowel end to a ball shape. I usually do most of the work on a longer dowel and then cut to length. Then do the next one.
It takes awhile that way but they generally look nice.

I don't know of any but, I sure would be interested in going to one.
If you ever get to Hutchinson for any reason, give me a shout and we will have our own sawdust making visit.
I dont get to Garden City very often.

You are welcome.
Are you going to try the other two also?
Glad you enjoyed the pattern and thank you for posting the picture.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Cutting a straight line
« on: July 30, 2010, 04:50:20 pm »
Very interesting. I will try that sometime. The thing is, how often do you really need a straight cut? I do from time to time but most stuff is curved lines. I'll probably forget about this idea untill after I make my next straight cut and then cuss alot when I rember it. ;D
