General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Question About Glue
« on: August 08, 2010, 12:08:25 pm »
I use Titebond I, II, or III on almost everything and have had NO problems. I live in a very humid area (Kansas) which, I would think would have more effect on glue than dry air would.
On oily woods it helps to wipe the joint with assitone or alcohol or any solvent that will cut through the oils and give the joint a dry place for the glue to adhere well. (Redwood is one that I have had problems with.)
I cant see where shrinkage or expansion of the wood pieces that small would effect glue joints. On larger pieces such as table tops, I know humidity, or the lack of, will cause wood movement, and joint failure.

Here is a photo of my try at a chess set.
Actually, I lied, I used walnut and oak for the boards.
The boxes are popular and do have lids for them.

Thought this might help and be of some encouragement.

And I'll do the same if I ever get to Garden City!  ;D
By the way, the State Fair is comming up next month. I live about 4 blocks from the fair grounds and can provide safe, free, parking if you should want to attend.
They do have some wood working classes for intering. I usually put in about three items each year but, I'm not going to this year. I have 2 third place ribbons and 1 second place. They have classes for almost everything. Turning. furniture, scrolling, carving and so on.
Keep it in mind.

I made two sets a few years ago for my son and son-in-law.
I used hard maple and walnut for both the pieces and the boards.
The boards are the easy part.  ;) Then make a box to keep the pieces in.
It gets kinda boreing cutting the pawns (I had 32 to cut)  but if you go slow and take your time, you will have something to be proud of and that no one else in the world will have.
Good luck and start making saw dust!!

The Coffee Shop / Re: Vacation and Holiday
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:40:31 pm »
I personally don't care for vacations.
That being said, I just got back from spending 6 days on vacation in Colorado Springs.
So what is so bad about that? Well, besides my wife we took our daughter, her husband, our son and his wife and five grandchildren!!
Eleven people for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then the decisions on where to go, what to do, and who is running late.
I was a nervious wreck and so glad to get home to 'peace and quiet' that I didn't even turn on the saw for three days!

 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Vic stood over his tee shot on the 450 yard 18th hole  for what seemed to be an eternity. He waggled, stood, waggled, backed off, steped up, and waggled again for several minutes.
Finally Jim said, "What's the problem?"
"My wife is watching me from the balcony on the club house and, I want to make a pefect shot." replied Vic.
"Get serious!" said Jim."You can't hit her from here!!!"

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spindle Sanders
« on: August 06, 2010, 10:51:43 am »
I have the Ridgid osculating spindle/belt sander. I love it! I have had it for almost a year and use it alot on my heavier wood projects mostly.
However if you make vases and bowls on the scrollsaw, it is a real time saver for cutting things down fast and smooth. I still have to finish sand with finer grit paper using other sanding methods.

Why do they call it a "pair" of pants when there is only one of them?

It has been 110 degrees in Hutchinson for the last two days and the humidity is just "killer"!!!
A newspaper reporter actually baked biscuts and cookies on aluminum foil on the dash of her car. Cooked hot dogs too!!!
Last year, at this time we had very mild temps.
Gotta go mow the lawn this morning before it gets too hot.
