Hello Peter....  Minwax Sanding Sealer and paint thinner.
The second time I live much better as there is some color in the wood.
Its in thirds....  Sealer, paint thinner and Danish oil dark walnut.   After it dries real good it only takes a light sanding to get that smooth feel of the wood. I was advised a long time ago to use a regular brown paper bag and use it like you would sand paper.  Works very well.  Anyway....  Danny  :+}

No I haven't Richard, but will give it a shot down the road.  I did get another reply about this procedure.  Only use a 25/75% ratio.  25% thinner or sprites.
This advice is from a guy that was into finishing cabinets.  Guess to each his own probably applies tho.  Danny  :+}

Thanks for your input Roy....  Like I said I am happy with the outcome of this new way.  Have you ever added a color to the sealer n thinner like (I am just guessing here?) maybe a stain or oil?  I am a fan of the different darker shades as I think the finish (lacquer/poly) brings out the beauty of the piece.  Danny:+}

There is a article in the Scrollsaw mag. about mixing Sanding Sealer and Paint Thinner.  50/50 and applying it to your project.  24 hrs. drying time and I just had to mention that I AM VERY, VERY HAPPY with the outcome.  The project I experimented on was my DRAGON.  The large oval.  Anyway after the mixture dried I could see that all the inside fretwork looked like it had already been varnished.  220 grit sanding and it is really, really smooth.

Has anyone heard or used this process?  Tks............Danny  :+}

Greetings from Alabama Roy....
     I have TRIED using spirals with very bad success!  Flat blades mostly the Flying Dutchman UR OR SR #1--#3 -- #5 will cut most all Portraits very, very well.  This is my 2cents worth.  Good Luck....  Danny  :+}

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Finishing Baltic Birch Plywood?
« on: September 15, 2011, 10:25:00 am »
Hey Bill....  Now I sure like your thoughts of using veneers.  I can just imagine how the finished product would look as compared to the BB look.  Thanks  :+}

And Gene your advice is the way I always get the wood preped before cutting and also afterwards.  I am just a fan of a shine on my finished crafts and BB just does not make it.

Has anyone tried bills suggestion about veneer?  Would LOVE to hear all about it.

Thanks....  Danny  :+}

General Scroll Saw Talk / Finishing Baltic Birch Plywood?

I know for some this is a kind a re-run post, but it has really been bothering me.
Cutting a Portrait out of say 1/4 BB is from all that you all have said the better of wood choices.  Run it thru a Danish Oil or other and a shot of semi-gloss lacquer and all looks good.  I've been cutting various designs of Christmas Ornaments.  All using 1/8 BB.

MY QUESTION....  How does everyone finish them?  My hang up is using the various danish oils or even a stain and a couple coats of semi-gloss lacquer
they just look plain ole PLAIN.

The projects I have finished in the past like using Pine, Popular,Cedar or other big store wood.  The final coat of Lacqure is Beautiful with a wonderful looking shine.

Anyway....  Danny  :+}
