Maybe while the meat is processing you should focus on making scrolled music boxes!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spindle Sander
« on: November 22, 2010, 01:56:48 pm »
I have so little room in my shop that I don't have space for a dedicated spindle sander.  I use spindles in my drill press.  I prefer the drums that use normal sandpaper rather than "tubes".  They don't last as long, but are cheap and quick to change out.  I recently ran across a delta drill press accessory which converts a drill press into an oscillating spindle sander and have been using it.  It works pretty well.  I got it at a local woodworking store for $50 (good deal).

When I used the icing dye it was a little difficult to dissolve, but it did with some stirring, and then it was easy to use.

You must have either Adobe Acrobat (the writer, not the free reader) or you may be able to do it in word and then print or save it as a .pdf file if your version has that option.  If you have Acrobat, you chose "create a pdf" and then "from multiple files" and select the ones you want to include.

One done and one to go!  My recipient will get one traditional ornament and one with a little Florida style and fun.  The traditional one is done but I spent today making routed bowls in Christmas designs for presents so the 2nd ornament will have to wait a few days.

I've been honored to see it in person.  Charlie is a member of the St Petersburg Woodcrafters guild, as am I, and he brought it in to show and also entered it in the Florida State Fair last year and took home a prize.  It's even more impressive in person than in the articles, and so is Charlie!

Hey GB I would be interested in your opinion of the dye after you try it.  I don't do a lot with it, but I've been happy with what I have done.  It's readily available, cheap and easy to use, yet not many people seem to go that way.  How did you like it?

Really very nice!  I love mahogany.  King of the hardwoods.

I use the dye intended for coloring cake icing.  I mix it with rubbing alcohol so it doesn't raise the grain and dilute to the desired intensity.  It also dries faster than water based.  I used it this time last year on a batch of Steve's bubble gum machines, and none have faded at all so far.  You can get it at stores like Michaels and it isn't at all expensive to use.

Hickory is good, but awfully hard if you are talking about 3/4 inch.  I make a lot of puzzles using poplar.  It's a hardwood with fairly close pores, and less expense than most hardwoods.  If you are talking about jigsaw puzzles of 1/4 inch or so, it's a different situation.

Hegner makes a great saw, and has for years.  With any used tool, check for damages caused by shipping or moving.  Put a blade in and slow the speed to its lowest setting.  Make sure that the blades goes straight up and down as far as left/right movement.  This will insure that the upper arm is aligned with the lower.  Make sure there isn't excessive back and forth movement as well, although most saws have some as a design element.  The saw should be close to vibration free at all speeds and operate with little noise.  If those things check out and the price is right, you've got a great tool.

And that's my 2 cents worth!
