Brag Forum / Re: Cedar Oval Bowl and a Mouse

Wondered how the mouse would look. Good job. Love the bowl. Unfortunately I can never get a bowl to turn out. I only have a hand held drill and can't figure the angles and width of cutting. Your work is very nice.

Troy

In reality making bowls is fairly simple.  There is a fairly simple relationship between the thickness of the board you are going to make the bowl from and the width of the ring and the angle you need to drill your entry holes so that the rings stack properly.  I use a hand drill myself for making the entry holes for the rings.  There is a trick a lot of us use and that is once we have figured out what angle to cut the rings at we cut a small guide block and use it to guide the drill bit along the right angle.

I do not know  if you are wanting to know the relationships but they are very easy to figure out.  In fact if you go to this link you can find a calculator for the angles that you need to drill and cut.

It really is fairly easy it just takes practice.  A bowl when first starting might have a thickness of the ring around 3/8 of an inch thick to start with.  I know this seems to be thick however until you gain the skills needed to make evenly cut rings this will allow you to have some variations and still be able to sand them smooth.  Carole Rotheman has several books out on making bowls and Steve Good has several patterns himself for them.  I will warn you that making bowls can be contagious.
