I know the old saying about "3 on a match" but, I would think that "9 on a scooter" would be even worse. Looks like an accdent looking for a place to happen.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Where can I buy Key Chains?
« on: September 01, 2010, 09:53:10 pm »
I buy mine at the local ACE hardwear store. They have  4 different sizes and sell the chain by the foot. They have the split connectors in the same sizes too and they are sold by the piece.
You might find them cheaper elswhere like Hoby Lobbyor Lowes or Home Depot too. The advantage to local buying....NO SHIPPING CHARGES.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: My newbie experience.

I have never done that.......Well, maybe once or twice....
I quickly learned to run my finger up and down the teeth of the blade to see which way the teeth are facing and that works most of the time unless you are using a reverse tooth blade. Then you probably should double check to see which end has the fewest teeth in the cutting direction. DAMHIKT  ;D

No Joke!!
Last night I was sanding a small project while I was waiting for things to load. In between clicking on posts, I got the whole thing sanded with 400 grit in about 30 minutes.

I have the DeWalt stand that is made for my saw. The stand is about 32" tall and the table of the saw is 38-3/4" at the front. I used the 'tilt' back leg to get about 7d forward tilt for better viewing. I can, and do, stand sometimes but, usually I sit on a bar type stool when I work.
I also (like GB) put a piece of 3/8" plywood between the stand and saw for a table (it has the tilt too ;D) I put a coffee can on it to toss the larger scraps into on the back, left side and, I can lay a tube of blades on it if done properly so it won,t roll off. I have a large ashtray for the dull, broken, and burnt blades (and my ashes too ;D)  toward the back, right side.

The most amazing accessory that I got for my saw was the 'Deadman/Foot switch' I bought. I can't believe how much easier it is for me to scroll.
The second best was the 'EZ lift'  (Well, I made my own) it sure helps when threading the blade from the bottom like I do.
I have a DeWalt saw by the way.

GB had the almost the same thought as I did....Space the numerals away from the wall the same distance as the clock movement and give the whole thing a "3-D", "floating" look.

Nice work. What font is that?

Shrimpmojo

The font is from an OLD lettering book that I have had since I was 13 0r 14 years old. It is called "Text" or "Black letter".
I just drew the letters on a piece of typing (or print) paper as large as I could then ran it through the copier to make patterns. (I wanted to keep the orginal in case I ever have to re-make the sign.) The plywood sign measures 12" x 15" for a refernce for you.
I also want to thank everyone for the nice comments. It is such a simple project but, is the first scrolling job that I've done for quite awhile.

PS. Janet, please don't wait with bated breath for the mailman to deliver your bench.  ::) It is ment to be a "DIY" project.  ;)  You can go to Lowes and get the "kit" and follow the instructions imbeded in your mind to build your own bench the way you want it. ;D

Brag Forum / Just a 'little' scrolling on this one
« on: August 26, 2010, 01:50:47 pm »
Our son ask me to make some signs for their church in Manhattan, Ks. so I gave it a try.

A little scrolling.....

A little frame making....

And the finished project up close....

I cut the lettering in 1/4" burch ply and glued it to another piece painted black. I made the frame/legs out of cedar and applyed 3 coats of Spar Urethane for weather protection. and then covered the signs with plexiglass on both sides for protection from the elements.
As I said it is not much scrolling but more than I've had time for for a long while.

Depends on how many board foot ya got in there. Ya might be able to scroll a keepsake out of it, especially if it has good grain to it.

It is "FLAT" it is just verticle instead of horizontal!!

I have learned that it really doesen't matter much unless you have it leanining on a big angle, and also the shorter (5' or less) boards don't warp much if you can keep all the sides exposed to air more or less. Even if you store lumber horizontaly you should put stickers between the layers for air movement.

Rog

PS one of my pet peeves is people who don't understand that "flat" and "level" are NOT the same things.  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

They seem to have forgotten that THEY work for US!
It seems that "public servents" think they have become the "masters".
