The Coffee Shop / Re: Wives
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:22:43 am »
My wife is into machine embroidery.  I digitize the patterns for her and she does the rest.  For this year's Christmas gifts for her sisters we intend to combine efforts.  I will make recipe card boxes with a recessed oval in the top, and she will stitch out embroidered inserts to fit into the recess.  I think it will be a fun project.

Crabbyboater,
I have had 2 RBI's A& loved both.  You probably already know, but Bushton Manufacturing bought out RBI and has parts available.  They are also selling saws and other tools again.  Hopefully they will re-establish a great tool line and keep it viable.  On the other hand, RBI saws rarely seem to need parts.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: warping problem
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:04:44 pm »
I have made boxes and installed rare earth magnets in two corners of the top which exert constant pull to counteract any tendency to warp.  I cut a mantle clock out of maple which is 3 inches thick, and the front is hinged.  The front wanted to warp, so I clamped it to the main body for a few days and then used magnets as the closure.  Never had the problem again.

My sympathies Bull.  I can only wish for you that life returns to close to normal as soon as possible.  I can only imagine the depth of the loss!

I wish I could still ride, but a couple of years ago a young man in a car brought an end to my bike and my riding days!  That's one of the things that brought me back into woodworking and scrolling.  Everytime a door closes another one opens.

Come on Guys!  You have to use a little more guile than that.  Two suggestions: take on an ambitious project to make something very personal as a gift for her, and invite her input.  Once the project is underway, talk about how much easier it would be to get the desired level of perfection if you only had the tool you need.  Alternative, take her along to a woodworking show or at least a good tool store and just stare at the tool you want and say something to the effect of how useful that would be, and how much time and labor it would save, but you just hate to spend the money on something for yourself.  Then if she goes for it, make her that personal item you know she would love as a way of expressing gratitude.

General Scroll Saw Talk / copy-writes again: just an observation
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:00:11 am »
I know the topic has been hashed and re-hashed, and I know the legal answers, etc.  I visited the Florida State Fair yesterday and in the crafts for sale sections, couldn't help but notice the number of products for sale in obvious conflict with copywrites.  I can't imagine how they get away with it.  There were wall signs with phrases and images from Disney, multiple versions of "It's 5 oclock somewhere", and many others.  If they were for sale on the internet they would be slammed in no time.  One of the vendors with the most numerous conflicts was the same vendor I observed at last year's fair, so they must still be getting away with it.  I guess in that small arena they keep doing it until they get that cease & desist letter.

Only one problem in a BIG bunch of posts over the time the forum has been open Steve.  More protection always means less freedoms and less functionality.  It's your playground, but I wouldn't touch a thing!  Thanks as always for everything you do for all of us!

Sometimes I use a shopvac, but usually I just open the doors to the alley and fire up the leaf blower.  Makes dusting a "breeze"!

Hi Larry.  I've been to Kauai twice and thought it was the only place I've been that was even better than where I live in Florida.  We really enjoyed the scuba and motorcycling through Wiamea.  I even have a 4X4X24 piece of Koa sitting in my garage waiting to turn into a bandsaw box someday.  Mahalo!

One of my favorite songs Rus.  Along with "knee deep in the water somewhere" with Zac Brown and J Buffett.

How about routing a t-slot in the back for hanging from a screw?
