General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blades....
« on: March 24, 2011, 06:03:26 pm »
I think RapidRoger is right on about the blades.  I also use Frued primarily.  Only difference is I use a 60 on my table saw and 80 or up on my radial arm.  There isn't really a lot of need for a full kerf blade on a table saw anymore as the technological advances in blades make the thin kerfs much more stable.  There are many good brands out there, but Frued is on of the best.  There is a local sharpening outfit near me who only charges $9.25 to properly sharpen a 10X60 carbide blade.

OK, going out on a limb here, but how about a very lightweight model of a house lifted by a bunch of helium filled balloons (as in the cartoon movie "UP!".  Even if it didn't win anything it would still be an attention getter!  You can get the balloons at a party store.

I have made boomerangs that flew pretty well.  Would that work?

I have an ipod dock in my shop and literally thousands of songs on my ipod.  Mostly country and some older rock.  Wouldn't enjoy working in the shop 1/2 as much without the tunes, and yes, I sing along constantly (sorry neighbors).

It really wouldn't be that hard to do GB.  I have used a router with a homemade large baseplate to make "routed bowls" for Christmas gifts, and the principle would be the same.  Buy a large piece of clear acrylic, bore a hole for the bit in the middle and mount it to the router as a base plate.  Place reference guides alongside the material to be cut (this could just be 1 by material) and use a wide bit to make shallow passes with the router.  It works well as long as you don't set up for too big a bite.  I use a bowl cutting bit and it worked out great.  Could save you a lot of time.

Not me!  I never make mistakes at the beginning of a project.  I always wait until it is almost done to screw it up!

I haven't used velvet or satin, but I have used adhesive backed felt, and I have flocked several.  The flocking works really well on small boxes.  You can buy it in a number of colors.  It is available online (used to be Donjer products, but I think they have changed names).  Woodcraft carries it as well.

Sure Russ, just go to http://www.woodworkingshows.com/ and click on the link to the Tampa show.  You can see what vendors will be there and print out coupons for freebies, and discounts on tickets.  I go just about every year.  Always manage to learn something new, and gives me a chance to look at all the new toys.  Let me know if you decide to go.  I'd love to shake your hand if we happen to be there at the same time!

You are getting the right advice GB.  I hope to pick up a drum sander this weekend at the woodworking show.  I already have a good planer.  Both can thickness wood, but each has its own place in the shop.  I get a lot of use from my stationery belt sander as well.  You can often find a used one cheap and they do come in handy.

Ditto on the idea of tracking craigslist.  I was lucky enough to find a nearly new powermatic 15 inch with a helical head (not the byrd shelix) for only $600 recently.  It really does a great job with almost indiscernible snipe.  I also walked away with a huge load of hardwood for next to nothing.
