Really nice work regardless of what finish you use!

Poplar is a good wood for a lot of things.  It is a hardwood, but doesn't get used much in furniture and such as it doesn't stain well.  Tends to come out blotchy.  That said, it is much tougher than pine and doesn't tend to split the way pine does.  It also makes pretty good trim to use to surround birch plywood.  I recently made a bookcase for my Grandaughter out of birch plywood trimmed with poplar and it came out great.  If you do want to stain it, just use a wood conditioner or a thinned out coat of clear finish first so you avoid the blotches.

No problem dunk.  I didn't use a drawer.  I cut out the outside shape, then cut a thin slab off the front, then cut the inside shape.  then I cut a thin slab off each end of the center piece (which had been removed).  The thin slab becomes the box top with one of the center cutoffs glued to it so it will hold position, and the remaining cutoff is glued in as a bottom to the box.  Then I flock the inside.  No drawer, just a removable top.  I made it out of some 8/4  Mahogany scrap I had laying around.  Pretty simple really.  I tend to make more bandsaw boxes with tops than with drawers.

I took the test, then needed a couple of drinks.  My wife may have been right all those times she said I was insensitive!

Dunk,

I gave the dolphin bandsaw box to a sisterinlaw for a Christmas present, so I don't have a picture of it any longer.  I will try to attach the file which has the pattern I used for the box.

I really enjoy making bandsaw boxes.  I have made them in many shapes including clamshells, dolphins, hearts, and others.  I have also made them from branch sections including the bark on the sides.  They can be a lot of fun!

Glad to hear you came out OK Russ!  We had a lot of local damage in Tampa/St Pete as well.  A gas station a couple of blocks from MacDill AFB (where I work) was trashed.  A truck blown over on the Skyway bridge and another on I-75, lots of smaller incidents all around.  Luckily I didn't loose anything at my little house.

My sympathy Judy, but I'm not sure who will be most disappointed, you or Mike!   :D
I've had way too many procedures, and they are never fun and they always have after affects you weren't expecting.  Hang in there!

A little off the subject GB, but it might be an idea for you.  You mentioned the baseball team.  I used to know a guy who made a deal with the local team/stadium and got all the broken bats for free.  He would rip the bats in half on his tablesaw, install cup pegs on them and sell them as coat racks.  He also sold wooden racks to hold a baseball and a bat through the stadium.  The only tools in his shop were a tablesaw, a drill press, and a stationary belt sander but he stayed pretty busy in retirement.  Maybe you could work something out there.

You didn't mention RBI and they are now back in production under Bushton Mfg.  I have had two and loved both.  I strongly suggest looking on Craigslist because sooner or later almost any brand you want will show up there and you can do well.  (if you can afford to wait)
