General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Getting Rid of Fuzzies
« on: January 11, 2012, 12:54:41 am »
There is no question, spiral blades produce a lot more fuzzies.  I'm with Judy, I use my sanding mop (220 grit) and support the piece with my hand.  Sharp reverse blades help, as do stack cutting (which you probably already do with fragile fretwork).

I have never used a torch.  I don't like open flame around all the wood dust in the shop. Plus I would probably set my work piece on fire and bust it all to pieces putting it out.

The very best way for me is gluing 220 sandpaper onto different shaped popsicle sticks.  Steve's idea.  It can be a bit tedious, but it is the most effective with the least chance of breaking the fragile piece you just spent so much time making.

Charlie's patterns are challenging.  But they make for an impressive piece when you finish.  Sometimes other scrollers are the only ones who can completely appreciate all your hard work.  Anyone can see however, you did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Putting Patterns on Wood
« on: December 30, 2011, 12:27:28 am »
I use spray adhesive and stick the pattern directly to the wood.  I use clear packing tape over the pattern.  It lubricates the blade and makes for a cleaner cut.  After removing the tape, which gets rid of most of the pattern, I clean up the remainder of the pattern and adhesive residue with mineral spirits.

I have never used painters tape, but it seems to be quite popular.  I think we are all creatures of habit and tend to do things the way we were taught when we first began scrolling.

If you ask ten scrollers their opinion you will get at least eleven differnt answers  :)

It is a beautiful finish.  You said it is not too fancy, but I disagree.  Nothing looks better than clean lines and nice hardwood.  You did an awesome job and all that sanding made for a great vase.  Thanks for sharing, Rog.

I usually use the same size backer board and make it out of 1/8 plywood.  Any thicker and you will have a hard time fitting it in a standard frame.  I spray paint my backer with a flat black finish.  As mrsn said many people use felt or card stock, which you can buy at any craft shop, these give you more variety of color.

I use Arlene's tacky glue.  It is clear, and it also dries clear, which helps the glue not to show.  I don't use glass.  I take the glass out for two reasons.  I don't like the glare and it keeps the piece thin enough to fit well in the frame.

This may be too obvious :), but I use good plywood for my piece (baltic birch) and the cheap stuff for the backer.  I usually watch for sales or make my own frames.  But I have had pieces that I had professionally framed.  This depends on how nice the piece is or to who(m?) I am trying to impress.

Congratulations!  What a nice and thoughtful gift.  All the Excaliburs' are excellent saws.

It should give you many enjoyable (trouble-free) years.  Now you will be able to return the favor and make a lot of cool stuff for your family.

That is a really deceptive thing to do.  I bought a Christmas ornament magazine a few years ago.  It was the same as their Christmas' ornament special from a year before, only with a different cover.

I feel your pain :D  Nice gesture though to give away the extra copy.

Charles Dearing always has some nice patterns.  They are not easy to cut and you did a great job on this one Glenn.  Thanks for sharing.
