Introduce Yourself. / New Members
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:59:17 pm »
We have had 49 new members join the forum so far this month. I see that several of you have posted already and are off to a good start. If this is your first experience using an online forum don't hesitate to ask for help. No question is silly, well maybe a few are silly but who cares we are all friends here.

Jump in and try things out. You won't break anything unless you hit the "Any" key which will wipe out the database and collapse the internet. Don't worry though because I have the internet backed up on my local hard drive.

There are not many rules here except to watch out for GrayBeard. He's a little scary but the doctors allow him out two days a week now.

Russ is my hugely under paid moderator here. He keeps watch over things and relentlessly bans the spammers(bad guys) to keep them from spoiling the family fun. He accepts tips preferably in small denomination unmarked bills.

There are craftsmen and women here from all levels of the craft. When you see the beautiful cuttings by Mrsn, Cherie, Merlin and others or the incredible intarsia by Intarsia92 don't be intimidated. They started just like you. Except for Intarsia92 who came out of the womb making beautiful intarsia. We also have some great pattern designers here like grandpa who helps more scrollers than Tylenol. Sheila Landry who is one of the top five pattern designers in the world today and yes I'm jealous. We even have a few readers that don't even have a scroll saw yet. They just enjoy learning while they wait to buy a saw. A couple of them are here looking to pick up women but I happen to know they are broke so don't waste your time ladies.

Glad to have all of you with us here and I hope you enjoy the forum and make a few new friends while you are at it. If you have friends that you think would enjoy the hobby send them our way and we will do our best to get them addicted to saw dust just like us.

The Coffee Shop / We survived!
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:46:05 pm »
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers
Who smoked and/or drank while they were
Pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing,
Tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes..

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
Locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode
Our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children,
We would ride in cars with no car seats,
No booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day
Was always a special treat.

We drank water
From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends,
From one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon.
We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And, we weren't overweight.
WHY?

Because we were
Always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
As long as we were back when the
Streetlights came on.

No one was able
To reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill, only to find out
We forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes
a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.
There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
No video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones,
No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth
And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt,
And the worms did not live in us
Forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and,
Although we were told it would happen,
We did not put out very many eyes..

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
Knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal
With disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
Was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years
Have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them?
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others
who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the
lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know
how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house
with scissors, doesn't it ?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: The things I like about this forum
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:19:27 am »
You all should be thanking yourselves. A forum without people is nothing but an empty journal. I made the journal but you all filled it up. I think what makes this forum special are the personalities of the core group of posters.  I can't list you all but you know who you are. The maturity level of the people here is very high. I have seen many a forum die a fast death because of bickering and bullying. You all treat each other as extended friends. You treat everyone with respect and show a caring attitude for new members. That's really important.

Were lucky to have someone like Russ around to keep things running smooth. Like I have said before without Russ this forum would be a real challenge for me to keep up with. I actually don't think I could do it. Between my more than full time day job and the blog and my family there is not much time left in the day to manage the forum. I can't thank him enough.

This is the place where I break out the guitar and we all sing Kumbaya http://www.stevedgood.com/Kumbaya.mp3

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Video request
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:43:04 am »
I might be able to do a short segment of a detailed fretwork cut but there is a ten minute limit on the Youtube videos. I can break them up into part 1, part 2 etc but from experience the part 2 and forward receive very few views. Most people will watch part one then move on. For example part one of my video on finishing scroll saw projects I had 48,314 views. Part two received 8,262 views. That's why almost all of my recent videos are limited to less than 10 minutes. Even if your audience is interested in what you are showing you have to have the type of personality that can keep them wanting to watch more. Unfortunately even my mom says I'm an old fuddy duddy. I have enough information to hold viewers attention for 5 to 10 minutes but not the personality for 30 minutes. People fall asleep:)

I like the idea though so maybe I can try to work on something.

I just created a board for Tutorials, Techniques and Tips. No tip is too simple. Post away. Remember just because it's old hat to you does not mean the next guy has seen it done that way.

Intarsia / Re: Welding Intarsia

My mind works in seriously strange ways. For the life of me I could not figure out how you were going to weld the intarsia pieces together. :) Some days I worry about myself.

Beautiful work.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Steve I have a question for you now.
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:19:56 am »
Chachi, normally you will want to print them at 100%. When you select print make sure that "page scaling" is set to none in the print dialog or the pattern will print incorrectly. Some pattern can be printed any size you want. Just understand that any pieces that fit together with slot and tab will have to be corrected. Holes for clock etc will also have to be changed.

Running an online forum is very challenging these days because the spammers are always knocking at the door. Russ and I are doing everything possible to keep them out. Unfortunately they can be tricky scum. Sometimes they can get through our defenses. I want to let you all know that I value the family friendly environment you guys have built here with all your sharing and caring attitudes. I guarantee I will do as much as I possibly can to keep the bad guys out.

I do think it's only fair to everyone to say that any online forum is subjected to these attacks. It is possible that an inappropriate message will get posted. I am truly sorry when it happens but use this and any forum with the understanding that the risk is there. Do your part to keep your computer updated and protected against attack also.

Luckily this forum software is pretty robust with decent security features. So far the security penetrations have been few and far between. We did have one today but my hero Russ was on his toes and banned the low life scum faster than a speeding bullet. If any of you saw the inappropriate post before it was removed I am sorry. I'll say it again. Russ you are the man. It takes a special person to volunteer time to help me keep this going. Without you it would be very hard to do. Thanks friend.

Hey GB, I for one am really looking forward to the new built in cross browser sync and the big increase in the rendering engine. I have Firefox installed on six different machines. It would just make things easier if syncing everything did not require any add-ons. Hopefully with better HTML5 support we can move further away from from flash.

@Gabby The thumbnails should start just to the right of the menu. There must be something wrong with the way it is working with different resolutions or browsers. Can you give me more details? What operating system, browser and resolution are you using if you know?

Karl, there might be more pictures of the patterns because we might not have them weeded out yet but there are the same number of patterns. Some patterns had a couple pictures and when we uploaded all the pix to the catalog we had to manually remove the dups.

bampasr: Are you talking about the home page where the instructions are? I'm not sure which blank space you are refering to.
