Pattern Requests. / Re: walking sticks

Just an idea, but what if you used the 3d keychain project that Steve just illustrated and cut someone's first and last name into it (perhaps slightly enlarged), then put a tenon on one end (or a floating tenon) so you can join it to a walking stick.  I have a bad knee so I use a stick myself fairly often, and I can tell you they are appreciated by those who need them.

Pattern Requests. / Re: Plans for an ARK desperately needed!

I have bought the plans for that ark, but haven't made it yet.  I also got the plans toymaker press just put out.  that one looks like a lot of fun as well.  I made an ark several years ago from combined ideas and plans and my wife and the grandkids love playing with it when they visit.

Forget the plans GB.  If it ain't raining you don't need the ark, and if it is raining then it's too wet to work on it.  Kinda like the leak in the roof you can't fix in the rain and it doesn't leak when it isn't raining.

Although it doesn't really replace a jointer, a router table can be easily set up as a jointer and has many other uses as well.  To use it as a jointer, just adjust the outfeed side of the fence slightly further forward than the right, then adjust the fence so that the bit takes off the same amount of wood as the offset between the two sides of the fence.  If the outfeed side of the fence is not separately adjustable, then adhere a piece of laminate or something thin to that side of the fence.

Mainewoods,
You have a point.  Sometimes I think they should be called sanded boxes instead of bandsaw boxes because I spend more time sanding than cutting them.

Thanks guys!  DW.  The child is my wife.  She displays a bunch of the things I make for her in her office.

I made this for my wife to take to her office.  The pattern was courtesy of our friends at http://www.toymakerpress.com/.  I decided to make only the cars and bunnies and used all scrap wood and paints already on hand.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Pocket hole joinery
« on: April 17, 2011, 07:54:32 pm »
I have used everything from mortise and tenon joinery to pocket hole and about everything in between.  Pocket hole is very practical for many projects as long as the visual appearance of the backside isn't an issue.  Even then you can plug or fill the hole if you wish.  Alignment is probably quicker and easier with pocket holes than either dowels or biscuits and you don't really need to bother with glue, clamping or drying time.  Why not?

Good job.  Looks good.  I love making bandsaw boxes.  Instead of felt, look into flocking.  It's easy and inexpensive and a good way to finish off the inside of boxes with a nice appearance.

I didn't see this thread until this morning, but I had a couple of drinks last night anyway!  Maker's 46, good bourbon!  Congratulations and appreciation to Steve.  I check other woodworking sites as well, but this one is home and gets checked more than the others combined.

I use Rapid Resizer which is designed to do exactly what you are looking for.  There is a free trial version on line at their website.  I really liked it so I searched online and found it at a discount, called the author and told him of my findings and he matched the price for me, so I downloaded it from him.

I have readers, an illuminated visor with various magnifying lenses, and the light.  I use the light for fine stuff, and readers for everything else.  Gabby, I made a doughnut shaped ring out of clear acrylic.  Works really well.  My light attracts dust too, so when not in use I turn it upside down.  Doesn't eliminate the dust but it helps.  I don't recall the wattage, but the bulbs are available @ the big boxes and seem bright enough for me.  Maybe my RBI saw is more prone to breaking them than your saw is.

The illuminated magnifiers really are handy when doing fine work.  I had one of the flexible neck, led types but it was recalled.  Then I was given one of the old folding crane types with the circular flourescent bulb.  I much prefer the circular bulb type!  I did have a problem in thata when a blade broke sometimes the saw's upper arm would hit the bulb and break it, so I cut a plastic clear doughnut and attached it under the bulb.  Problem solved!

I use Sloan's tubes also, but I made the holder to mount on the side of my RBI scrollsaw.  One less thing to go looking for & try to remember where I left it.
