General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: wood question
« on: November 20, 2010, 10:05:25 pm »
Actually, balsa wood is considered to be a hard wood but of course, it wouldn't be very good for shelves.
If it were my choice, I would go for poplar. It is fairly inexpensive and available at the big box store, machines well and with a stain and a hard finish, doesn't look too bad. If looks are more important than cost, I would try mahogany or red wood for weather restance, weight and the looks too.
Just my 2 centovos worth.

Very cleaver Bud! I really like your design! It seems alot more useful than my standard DW stand. I have modified mine for blade storage etc. but, it doesn't have a drawer which would be very handy at times for patterns etc. And the adjustabilaty of tilt would be super when the ole neck and back start to bother me.
I may just have to scrap the non movable steel stand and build one like yours. I don't have to move it much but, it would be nice to pull it out to clean up the saw dust and scraps that get behind it from time to time. And I LOVE the fold up wings too!!

I have my DeWalt tilted on the stand too and agree with dgman. Also, it is easier to clean the saw dust off, just one sweep of the hand and all the dust goes right onto your lap.  ;D

My previously mentioned co-worker tody was steering me toward a Proxxon saw.  It is small.  But then I read in the description that the max ripping length was 4.25" (yes, inches).  So I don't think that will do!  So I am leaning toward something like Julie mentioned - larger but you can sort of fold it up and move it to the side.

Becky,
I think that you may have misread the discription of the Proxxon table saw. I'm sure that it means ripping HEIGHT not LENGTH.  In other words, you can rip a board as long as nessary but the blade won't cut deeper than 4-1/4" so you can't cut through a 6" x 6" block for example or resaw a board of 5" width.
I don't know anything about Proxxon saws but most are designed to cross cut and/or rip almost any length nessary.

I may be wrong for the second time in my life though. ;D

I made this one for my barber about 6 years ago. It is my pattern design. Maybe this will give you some ideas. If you want my pattern, I will send a copy to you via 'snail mail'. Just e-mail me an address.

Can I ask what blade would be good for Plexiglass or Lexan?

I ordered these:

FD-UR No. 1, 3, 5
FD-NS No. 2/0
FD-J No. 3/0
FD-P No. 2/0
Assortment Pack

I was just cutting plexiglass on my saw yesterday. It was 1/8" thick and I was using a Olson #3CT (crown tooth) blade. It cut just fine and I'm sure that any fine tooth blade will work just as well.
I think the FD-PSR No 5 with 18 t.p.i. should work just fine also as it has the rev. teeth and will keep the bottom side cleaner.
The thing to rember is to SLOW the speed down or the plexi will get hot and melt back together right behind the blade and trap it and you got BIG trouble then!!! (DAMHIKT)  ;D

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Puzzle Pattern Book

With Christmas getting near I would like to know how to make the 25 piece 5x5 puzzle longer. I have a few grandchildren and would would like to put their name on one. 8" to 12" would be long enought.

Thank you.

Keep Christ in Christmas.

Print two copys of the same puzzle and glue them end to end on your wood stock of the proper length to get a 50 piece puzzle.
