Hey GB,
While you are at it  (making a larger wristwatch)  go ahead and hinge the bands and buckle too...... I did.

The smaller one at the bottom  (orginal size)  is also hinged but, gold one at the top is a real watch, I didn't make that one.  ;D ;D

great job done!

I know tung oil, please tell me about th polly, what is that?

"Polly" is my short name for polyurethane. It comes in brush on, spray on and wipe on and in different degrees of gloss. They have high gloss, semi gloss and satin. They all are a clear and durable finish for all kinds of wood  working.

I haven't posted for awhile here so I thought I would show some of the Christmas persents for my grand kids that I've cut this week.

The crosses for the grand daughters are 1/4" thick x 1-1/2" wide x  2" tall and cut from Panga panga wood.
The fish keychains are cut from walnut for the grandsons and are 1/2" x 1" x 3-1/2" long.
All are finished with Formby's Tung oil finish and wipe on polly.

You are doing a bang-up job on all those little gear and pinion teeth!!!
That is the one thing that stops me from trying a clock. Just trying to keep all the teeth smooth and even so they will mesh would drive me to drink water!!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Aromatic Cedar Finishing?
« on: December 14, 2010, 10:49:30 am »
Yes, I think it will work but, you won't be able to smell the cedar if that is what you are after. If you just want to protect and keep the color, I would use something that will stop the UV rays from faiding out the red and turning it brown.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Lemon oil
« on: December 09, 2010, 10:14:55 am »
If you are going to paint, don't bother with lemon oil. The lemon oil is suppose to bring out the grain and is used before shellac or polyurethane or any other clear finish. And by the way, lemon oil never completly drys so don't expect it to. It may feel dry but if you don't seal it with a top coat, it will seep out FOREVER!!
I use BLO....Boiled Linseed Oil for most of my projects and then wipe off the excess. BLO will dry after some time and then finish with a clear coat of polyurethane.
Hope that helps.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Oval key chain question.
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:19:55 pm »
It's called "cut & paste" only on this one, you use real sissors and real paste.

Personally, I would print it out, cut each letter (as a square of course) and lay it face down on a strip of scotch tape end to end and then paste (spray glue in this case) to the wood. After cutting the letters, center the oval from a second copy over the letters and cut the outside shape including the hole for the chain.

Just my two centovos.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: FD Ultra Reverse blades
« on: November 28, 2010, 04:52:51 pm »
I have found that the same blade type. Cuts different. I have had a blade in the saw. Broke it and put a new blade in and it felt like it cuts different? Am I nuts or can this happen. I know I may still be nuts..

I know what you are saying. Sometimes when you have been cuttting with the same blade for awhile and get used to it, then change to a new one of the same number and make, it feels different.
I think that it is one or two things that do it. First, you now know what a SHARP blade can do for you.  ;D  The old one was getting dull but you didn't notice that it was getting harder to push because it was easier to control and it was so gradual of a change, you just got used to it.  :-[  The other thing that I have noticed, especially when doing alot of corners and tight turns, you can twist the blade in a way that makes it want to drift right or left, and again it is such a slow and slight change that it is easy to get use to. So you keep cutting until it breaks!
NOW you have to retrain yourself using a new sharp, untwisted blade to let the blade just do it's work!  :D  But, not to worry, you will soon twist that blade and dull it until it feels like the old one.  ;D   Untill it breaks........  :D :D :D :D

Very nice job!
That is one way to use plywood that I had'nt thought of!
I may just have to try that sometime. I have cut several plywood projects but always did it in the other direction. It took me some time to see how you did it too.
Thank for showing it. I'm always interested in unusal ways of doing things.

The Coffee Shop / Re: This 'video' shows real "guts"....
« on: November 24, 2010, 04:31:37 pm »
I'm sure that whole thing was staged (too meny camera angles not to be) but still, that takes alot of guts to be climbilng around on a fabric wing with all the cable braces, no parachute, and climbing from one plane to the other!! Getting from the lower wing to the top one would take a monkey and then to stand up with out a brace is just crazy!!!  :o
There was at the very least alot of trust in both pilots and herself to even think about doing something like that.
You will note that you would NEVER see me doing anything close to that.  ;D
