Brag Forum / Dolphin Puzzle in Monkeypod wood
« on: July 14, 2011, 12:21:11 am »
I cut this puzzle tonight out of monkeypod wood.  It is extremely lightweight, almost like balsa.  It grows here locally and this tree was destined for the brush site if not for a local company who intercedes and takes hardwood trees and mills them locally.  There is a lot of hardwood in Pinellas county Florida and this is a great service to the woodworkers of the area!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: RBI "Eagle" saw for sale....
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:46:30 pm »
I have had two different RBI hawk saws.  I still use my 26".  They are great saws.  RBI went out of business a few years ago and then was purchased by Bushton MFG.  They are slowly becoming available again and they do still offer parts etc.  I've never known anyone who had a bad word to say about RBI saws.

My wife & I spent a long weekend in Savannah, Ga. a short while back.  Last week we took the week off and had our 2 youngest grandkids up for their first visit without parents.  This weekend we met their Dad and the 2 older kids at Myakka River State Park near Sarasota and stayed in a palm log cabin built in the 30's, went Kayaking, and exploring the woods. Great time!

I was out on vacation in a log cabin with the Grandkids this weekend GB, so I didn't see this thread until just now.  Sorry to hear of the problem, but I think you made the right decision.  It's right for you, and that's all that counts.  I've had several procedures for different things and they all come with benefits and unexpected "costs".  I'm sure you are familiar with it.  Overall, they are almost all worth the costs.  Know we are all pulling for you!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: HELP! Cordless Drill!!!
« on: July 10, 2011, 08:57:59 pm »
I recently bought a two piece set by Porter Cable.  Drill and impact driver.  They are 12 v, but lithium Ion batteries.  If they aren't strong enough, then I should have been using a corded drill instead.  The combo is great, and the batteries charge quickly.

Pattern Requests. / Re: looking for a manatee

Thanks guys!  I will work with them and see how it goes.  I'm lousy at designing.  Might be interesting to see if the compound cut one would make a 3d jigsaw puzzle.

I've had the same problem.  Solved it by using a #9 pgt blade at high speed with a VERY slow speed feed.  The problem seems to be that the blade bows when cutting that much thickness and it results in an uneven cut, especially in the turns.  I tried some Olsen "thickwood blades" but like the pgt's better.  I did speak with one ugy who bought some #14 blades and had good success with them.  You might also check that the blade is square to the table from front to back as well.  I have done that one as well.

I do a lot of animal puzzles and a friend has requested one of a manatee.  Anybody have one to share or want to tackle the task?  Thanks in advance!

Hi shutterbugdm!  It was Craftsman Supply.  I'm not sure where they got it because I got the impression it was old, even though it appeared unused.  Nice people in that store.  I also visit Intercity  Lumber when I am out that way.  I live in St Pete, but work primarily @ MacDill AFB.  I assume you have been to Woodcrafters in Clearwater?
