General Scroll Saw Talk / EX 21 question..
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:37:46 am »
RE the ex 21 do you notice  much back and forth movement of the blade, from front to rear when sawing.  As if the blade is moving in a elipse?  I'm thinking of upgradng and if it has the same problem my 10 year old 788 is developing I'll just get  a new 788.

Thanks for any feedback.

It is always safer to use the table.  If you can get to everything using your table I'd suggest using the table as you can keep the work more stable.

Larry her pattern is very cuttable.  You too can do it.  As you cut replace the waste wood and tape it into place.  Use a zero clearance insert and start with the more delicate areas first.  You CAN do it.  Just try!  The worst that will happen is you will have a hunk of designer fire wood.  One other tip is to stack cut it.  try 2-3 layers of BB plywood.

Be sure and post a pic of your finished project.  I'm rooting for you!

I have a scrap piece of wood that my project wood rests on, this helps to avoid blow outs as you described.

Jimbo,
I use the kind that when it is on I can remove my foot and then have the luxury of being able to move around.  I just tap it to turn it off again.  You could mount it up higher, and use your knee to turn it on and off as well.

To each his own though.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Does BLO work on paint?

I don't see any advantage to using BLO over paint.  I would think if you tried it over acrylics you may dissolve the paint.  Not sure never having tried it.

I take my nozzles off and toss em into  a jar filled with paint thinner they are always sparkling clean when I need em & never clog up on me.  I also hang onto them after the can is empty so i always have a few spares around just in case.

There are times when cutting that you need to shut down the saw and do not want to let go of the project.  I don't know how I got along without my foot switch.  Plus for the 788 and it's temperamental on off switch, some/most users that i know have placed tape over it to keep the dust out and use a foot switch instead.

I think OP was asking what type of wood we use for making puzzles.

I use hardwoods, if they are going to be painted I use poplar.
