General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: GLUEING FELT
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:19:04 am »
Craft stores have felt with a sticky back already put on it. Just cut to shape, peal the paper backing off and stick in place. It comes in 8" x 10" sheets allot like typing paper and a lot of colors.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: warping problem
« on: March 06, 2011, 02:54:48 pm »
I have made allot of wooden boxes but the way I do it won't work on a fretwork box like you show.
I usually build a solid wood box and glue all six sides so that there is NOT a separate top and then cut the top/lid off on my table saw leaving any where from 1/2" to 1" lip all around the top for hinges or a recessed fitting lid. They do not warp that way. This method also helps with grain matching on a highly figured, solid wood box.
In order to do a fret work box that way, you will have to leave a blank area all around the box (about 1/2" or more) down from the top. for the cut to be made there.
It may not always be a workable solution but, if you can do it that way, it will keep the top from warping.
Hope this makes sense.

That seems like a good idea BUT allot of trouble to make. I have two much easier things that I use to do the same thing.
The first is to use a telescoping magnet to reach under the bench. It looks like a pocket pen but telescopes to about 24" long. Used for metallic items.
The second is to use for non metallic items. I place a small piece of nylon hose ( old panty hose) over the end of my shop vac using a rubber band to hold it in place and it sucks up the dust but, larger items are stopped by the hose and when the vac is shut off the item drops onto the bench.
Just my two centavo's worth.

OK, You've lost me on the "bag holder". I don't understand what it does or how it does it?
Just slow I guess but, I don't understand it.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: tilting scroll saw

Not sure why you would want to tilt your saw some say it helps to see the lines on the patterns, for this I just move my light so I can see cant see any other advantage
Jimbo

In my case, it helps to look more stright down on the pattern instead of from the side angle. I can follow the line a bit easier and see where the blade is cutting as I go. I use a light too but, the tilted table also is kind of self cleaning as you cut....If you dont mind a lap full of saw dust.  ;D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blotchy stain help..
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:05:31 am »
Not sure where you saw that info but, it should be somewhere in this thread.
Anyway, the best way to stop wood from blotching when staining is to coat it with shellac first. The way I do it is use a one pound cut of shellac, let it dry, lightly sand it with a very fine grit of sand paper (220 grit or higher) to knock down the fuzzies then stain and finish to suit your self.
The shellac you buy in the quart cans in the store is a 2# cut. In order to get a 1# cut is to mix some shellac with an equal amount of denatured alcohol and brush it on. (I use a foam brush usually)
It drys fairly fast, depending on the temp. and humidity, usually 15 minutes or so and fills the pores of the wood so it doesn't soak up the stain in different areas of the wood more than other areas.
Hope that helps.

Tilted or not, it is a good idea to bolt your saw down in some way. (even clamps if your saw doesn't have holes in the base already)
It helps with vibration and with some saws it keeps it from "walking" around your bench.
If you do tilt it (and I have tilted mine) try various angles first. You can put spacer blocks under the back and try it. If it isn't enough, use another thickness or two until it feels good to you.
It does let parts and saw dust fall off the front of the table onto your foot or leg but, that is a small price to pay for being able to see the pattern and feeling comfortable while sawing.
Just my two centavos worth.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Frames
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:55:49 am »
I do make alot of my frames and have been known (for larger ones) to use door/window trim stock and just rabbet the back for the glass and thinner plywood cuttings.
I also use alot of barn wood frames.
If you use wider boards to make the frame, you can cut out the inside shape to anything you might want. I have made oval frames that way.

That is a very cleaver idea!! :o Wish I had thought of it a long time ago. :-[
The only problem I see is that I some times cut longer boards down to size on my saw and the sides would limit that idea for some of them. But, I have other saws that would do a better job of that anyway.  ;D

You are welcome dunk.
I was just wondering the other day if you ever got that pattern cut. You did a great job on it and I'm glad I could help.
Now, where are the crosses that I sent you? Ha Ha Ha

If things always went the way I think they should, life would soon get so boring that it wouldn't be worth living. The unexpected hardships of life are what gives us hope and makes it all worthwhile. If it were so easy, anyone could do it, and we wouldn't have anything to look forward to.
God gave us life, he didn't say it would be easy and in fact he sometimes tests us just to see if we are paying attention.
