This is just a test fit. Nothing glued up yet. 1/4" Cherry with Maple accent. Cut with Flying Dutchman UR 1 and 3 blades. Still have to cut the top shelf, or I should say re-cut. Pattern by John Nelson in the Summer 2009 issue of ScrollSaw Woodworking & Crafts.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Oil Finish
« on: March 14, 2011, 12:33:23 am »
This is what works for me. It may not work for you. Try it, you may or may not like it.
I use mostly hardwoods for my scroll saw projects. I do not use stains as I like the natural look of the woods. Using an oil will bring out the color and grain of the wood. I use a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. I keep this mixture in an old glass mason jar. I use an old metal baking pan to soak the project in the oil.
Let soak for five to ten minutes. Using nitrile gloves, remove the piece from the oil, shake off the oil then wipe off the residual oil with a clean lint free rag. I use old tee shirts. Set the piece on an old baking cooling rack to let dry. For porous woods like red oak, check often and wipe off any oil that may seep out of the pours.
Depending on the humidity, let dry for three to five days.
After it is dry I topcoat with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer.

A recent pattern request and subsequent pattern by Grampa got me to thinking.     how many of you guy's wives are Quilters or sew for a hobby. My wife is a quilter and spends more money on fabric than I do in wood!
And for the married Lady's, is your husband a woodworker or crafter? Or are you into quilting?

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Sanding a Blank
« on: March 07, 2011, 10:05:36 pm »
This tip will save you allot of time after your done cutting.
Before you mount you pattern, Sand your blank to finish grit, For me usually 220 grit. After you remove your pattern you only have to sand off the fuzzies with the same 220 grit.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Blades slipping
« on: March 07, 2011, 05:49:41 pm »
If your blades slip in the blade clamp when under tension, Clean the ends of the blades with 150 grit sand paper. The blades have a small amount of oil on them from the manufacturing process. Also periodically.clean the blade clamps by folding a piece of sandpaper in half and insert into the blade clamp and sand the inside of the blade clamp.
Instead of sanding the end of the blades, some people clean off the oil with mineral spirits or lacquer thinner.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Picture frames
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:26:58 pm »
Allot of you want to know how to make a picture frame for their portrait projects. The two most important factors are cutting perfect degree cuts and making each pair of sides exactly the same length. For this I use a miter sled for my table saw. I have a commercial sled called a Dubby. It will cut perfect 45's every time. It has a stop block to cut each pair of sides exactly the same length. If they are not exactly the same length, there will be a gap in a corner of the joint. and  the same thing will happen if you don't have perfect 45"s.
I usually use 3/4" stock with a round over on the outside edge. I cut the rabbit deep enough to fit the portrait and the backer board. I don't reinforce the joints because I glue the frame to the portrait and the backer board. That way it all becomes one single unit.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Stacking and stickering
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:04:20 am »
In a previous post about warping wood, I spoke of stacking and stickering to help keep thin woods from warping. This is done so air can circulate around the board to keep the moisture equal on both sides of the board. If more moisture is absorbed on one side than the other it will cup. So it is important to keep things constant on both side of the board.
Use stickers or sticks all the same thickness. Stack the boards with the stickers in between each layer.
The first picture is the Spanish Ceder used in the Gentleman's Box. The second pic is a shipment of 1/4" cherry, maple and walnut that I received from www.ocoochhardwoods.com. The wood has been sitting that way for about two weeks now, and is now ready to be worked.
