Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Mail Order wood
« on: July 14, 2011, 11:19:25 am »
Quite often I resaw and mill my own thin woods, But sometimes I need to order thin woods online. The biggest complaint I hear is the wood warps or cups after they receive it. What happens is the moisture in your shop is different from the moisture from where it was shipped. It is important to sticker and stack the wood when you receive it to allow the wood to acclimate to your environment. Cut your stickers out of dry wood all the same thickness. I usually use pine, but use what you have on hand. Using stickers allows air to circulate evenly around the boards.
Here is a couple of pictures of what I mean. This is a shipment of 1/4" Maple, Walnut and Cherry boards I ordered online. I will let them acclimate for at least six days.

Brag Forum / Screaming Eagle Portrait
« on: July 12, 2011, 04:25:20 pm »
Pattern by Gary Browning in the Summer issue of SCROLLSAW WOODWORKING & CRAFTS. I stack cut three layers of 1/8" Baltic birch plywood. I didn't have material to build frames. I have a lot of aromatic ceder strips used for lining closets. So I decided to do something with that. This is what I came up with. It gives it a rustic look I think.
Tell me what you think!

For Charlie,
We give thanks for the creatures who live along side us as companions and friends.
For their loyalty, love and trust which enrich our lives and give us joy. May we learn the value of kindness, the power of mercy, the strength of gentleness and a new spirit of humility.

General Scroll Saw Talk / I just made a sale
« on: June 12, 2011, 04:21:39 pm »
I'm sitting here watching the NASCAR race when the phone rings. It's the owner of the Woodcraft store. I have allot of items on display at the store to promote my scroll saw classes. He has a customer that wanted to buy the Einstein portrait I had on display. I said sure, Is fifty to much? He suggests it should go for more, but will let me know what the customer says. He calls back to tell me the customer said it was not enough and paid $70 for it! And I'm just sitting here!
