Title: BLO/Mineral Spirits
Post by: Lakelad on March 24, 2012, 06:14:57 pm
I just finished my first project using BLO/Mineral Spirits mixed 50/50 at Dan's suggestion in another post. I have been a Lemon Oil finisher but love this method. It really makes the grain pop, the wood looks great. We can learn so much from this site.

Just bought my BLO today.  Have to pick up the mineral spirits and I'm in business.

I have been using Dan's method and I really like the look and how it finishes. Thanks Dan for the tip.   :)

I have used blo in my woodturing and scroll projects for quite a long time. And it is still my favorite finish!

That is what I prefer to use, but not practical in an apartment because of the odor. Only so much room sometimes in the little paint room at the wood shop here at the retirement village. Sheila Landry mentions using mineral oil. There is no odor. Think it brings out the grain, but seems to take longer to be ready to spray on the lacquer.
Plan to use the BLO/spirits for special projects anyway.

Pat,

One thing to keep in mind.  BLO and mineral oil are quite different.  BLO has ingredients added to it so that it will dry.  Mineral oil doesn't, so technically speaking it doesn't dry (cure) in the same sense as we understand other wood finishes to dry.  This would significantly lengthen the period of time between application of the mineral oil and the topcoat.  Personally, I would probably avoid using mineral oil underneath another curing finish.  There is potential there for compatibility issues.  I've never tried it myself and I couldn't find any information in any of my resource books regarding the use of mineral oil under a film finish.  Others may have had success using it in this manner, but I think there are other options that would pose less risk of finish failure at some point down the road.

Mineral oil is typically used for wooden items that come in contact with food, such as bowls, cutting boards, utensils, etc.  It is food safe and not topcoated with any other product in these particular applications.

I sometimes mix my BLO with orange oil 50/50. or a BLO, orange oil, spirit mixture.
Orange oil thins the BLO as well and gives it a great smell!!

Not sure what your mineral oil is but I use mineral turpentine [paint thinners] and that evaporates very quickly, all it does is make the penetration of the oils into the wood easier
