Title: Crown of thorns finished
Post by: SheGold on March 23, 2012, 05:37:01 pm
Ok it finally got dry and warm enough for me to finish it. GB I know you wanted a different color background but I like the mahogony. The crown of thorns is cut out of baltic birch 1/8 , the frame is 1/2 in. pine with a mahogony stain, the backer is a piece of mahogony 1/8 in. I finished with the 50/50 boiled linseed/mineral spirits followed with several coats of semi-gloss poly. Please feel free to comment anything you like , all I ask is be truthful. Thats how I learn. GB I have a second one I will be finishing differently. Thanks to all who look and comment... Sheila

Beautiful, love the colour, and I will be trying the semi-gloss poly as a finish myself, looks good. Thanks for sharing.

I think it looks fantastic. The backer and frame give it a natural reddish cast that looks great.  :)

I was giving an opinion based on what I would do. Your piece is stunning! Be proud of it!

If I ever get to that part of my 'to do' pile I will show you my rendition just so you can compare.

There is no 'right or wrong' way to do our craft, just personal preference.

Very Nice!!!!!

Hey Sheila, I think it turned out great! Personally I like a wooden backer board, and I make my frames simple like your. Overall, you did a wonderful job!

GB I wasn't upset my friend. Since this is my first frame I'm keeping it and I loved the look of the mahogony.. Can't wait to see yours... Sheila

Reaper I have trouble with spiral blades.. This was cut with a 2/0 blade. I seem to be able to control it better than the spirals. Thanks for asking... Sheila

Hi Sheila ,for the staining of the pine frame ,did u use water based or oil based stain? Since i have only mdf at my end to work on but i think i can get hold of pine and try my hand at framing :) thanks!

Just an opinion, but it appears there is too much of the same color.  Mayhap a contrasting background or frame would enhance the cutting more.  Again, just an opinion.

Thanks for sharing this and a nice job of cutting.
