I was cutting out a cross last night and started wondering if I am cutting in the right direction-I cut counter clockwise with the waste on the lift side of the blade, but I have seen some videos where the people are cutting clockwise ie, waste on the right side of the blade. maybe it doesn't make a bit of difference --just wondering how others cut--Richard aka thumbs

I cut both ways, whichever is easiest for me at the time. I dont think it makes much difference either way. ( but as usual - I could be wrong lol)
-
I also go both ways.. Although I try to keep the waste area on the side of the turn, that way I don't cut into the project... Sheila

I'm with the ladies. Cut both ways, just a case of how I feel I guess.

I agree cut both ways, however the left side of the blade will give you a smoother cut so I cut inside cuts counter and outside clockwise where possible. On delicate pieces cut inside cuts the direction that will give you the best advantage not to break off.
-
I cut both clockwise and counter clockwise and all on one project. It really doesn't matter, it's depends on what is comfortable to you. The exception would be if you are cutting a bevel (on an angle) like bowels, then it definitely would make a difference. 8)

Need to add one more to the "both ways" vote as whatever seems to work the best at the time. I have not noticed any difference between the two.
-
I normally cut with the waste on the right side whenever possible, but I don't think it makes any difference. I think it's a matter in which you feel most comfortable.
-
I cut with the wast on the left, just the way I started to scroll.
-
i cut both ways, but mostly the waste on the right maybe cause i'm a lefty!
-
The only time I even think about it is when the table is tilted and I'm stack cutting inlays on a project. Which brings to mind.............
No one has even discussed this type of cutting on this forum. I haven't tried one for quite some time but, I have done them in the past. Has anyone else done this type of cutting?
I may have to post some pictures of some that I have done.

I feel comfortable cutting both ways, but to paraphrase what everyone has stated,"It is your decision on what is best for you"

Thumbs.... I always start a cut with the waste on the right. Think its how I learned 4 years ago. Now its a habit. Cutting the other direction is not a problem. Just keep on the line. LOL Danny :+}
-
Depends on what type of line I'm following. Which ever direction is most advantageous to give a clean cut into and out of the corners and such. If it's simply a circle, then I go counter-clockwise. Another lefty here.
-
I can cut in both directions, however in most cases I cut with the waste on the right. First off, the blade cuts a little smoother on the left. But most importantly I always know where the waste is while I'm cutting. In doing intricate fret work, you can sometimes lose track of which side the waste is. I will turn the piece so the blade cuts into the wast to make a sharp turn. Since I always cut with the waste on the right, I will never use the good side to turn into.

I'm for both ways also. It's just whatever I feel comfortable with at the time....Al

I cut both ways too.

I do a lot of double bevel inlay and depending on which piece of wood I want to drop down into place or come up into place will determine which way I cut the image. So I cut on either side of the image.
-
I typically cut the left side, waste on the right. The teeth are slightly more agressive on the right side, so I try to keep that in mind. Depending on the cut, I also cut both ways. It's all what a person gets used to.
-
I go both ways, mostly depending on the particular cut. Sometimes I think ahead a lot when I drill my holes so they are in awesome places for ease of cutting, other times I just drill and figure it out later.
-
I cut with the waste on the right, then I will cut with the waste on the left, but once in a while I will have to waste the whole thing.

If I use a flat blade i go clockwise, if I'm using a spiral I go counter clockwise.

I normally cut counter clock wise as the blade seems to cut better but it does not really worry me what ever suits

I cut both ways as well.

I will stand on the 5th amendment but I prefer to stand in front of my scroll saw. The only thing I can say is that the temperature and background music do not influence the speed or performance leading to the end.
Actually it does depends on how you look at it. I prefer to think of myself as being a straight cutter and focus on one line.
What was the question?
-
I think it is in relation to being left or right handed. Maybe it would be a good case study. All the lefties go to the left side of the room and all the righties go to the right side. The people who are ambidextrous can sit back and count. Now lets count. I am sitting now with a beer to boot. That is my input. Have a good night everyone. ;D
-
I cut with the waste on the right side and I,m a lefty.

There is just a fine line between sanity and insanity. I believe with this question we are standing with one leg on each side of that line. If no two people are genetically the same how can they all scroll saw the same way. All patterns are identical but the end cuts are all different from each other. cdrover do you have another beer for me. I prefer a glass over a boot.
-
I read another survey on this some time ago, but don't remember if it was on this board. General concensus was that one should cut counter clockwise, keeping the barbs on the saw blade pointed into the waste areas. I'm a lefty, and realized I cut whichever way appealed to me at the moment, so changed my ways to cut counter clockwise. But I now realize I've drifted away from that a bit.

I been cuttin both ways too. Just wondering , if you cut just one direction would it wear the set off that side of the blade faster? Ok,,I'm gettin tech. now. LOL!!!

No, The set and blade teeth will wear the same. So by the time the set wears, the teeth will be worn!
