Title: Different kind of plywood

When I was browsing around in Lowes the other day in Waynesboro PA  I noticed they carried a plywood called ?Maple-Appleply?.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  Although a little pricey (can?t remember the exact price) it looked like it would be really good for scroll sawing.  It came in ?, 3/8, ? and ? Inch.  Had many plies and was very dense with no type of voids or knot repairs (footballs) that I could see.

Hey Al, Maple ply Is used for drawer sides and such and is usually very expensive compared to Baltic birch. I have never used it, But I hear it is ok for scrolling.

Interesting.  Can't say I have seen that type of plywood in any of our local BORG stores.  Will have to check next time around.

Yea Its good quality stuff. Because like Dan said its usually used in cabinetry work. I have used some in 3/8. It cuts quite similar to Baltic birch. I personally can't justify the extra cost. If I'm going to pay extra for ply I Just get it from ocooch. It is great stuff with minimal to no voids and flawless finishes on both sideds.

Thanks guys.  Price wise it is not justifiable.  I guess that if you had a super special project to do (MAYBE the price would be something to overlook) but not something I would want to use all the time.  Kind of scared me at first.  Didn?t know what to think.

Scott, I checked out ocooch web site and their prices seem to be reasonable. I have been out of the loop for a while and really don?t know what to expect.   What other sources do you use for BB and thin hardwoods etc?

I buy all my BB from Sloans Woodshop (http://www.sloanswoodshop.com/plywoods.htm). Great prices and service from David & Rhonda Sloan.  :)

If you do use it , I would urge you to test sand a piece of scrap before hitting your work with the sandpaper as the veneers on some of the better plywood?s can be very thin. Iggy

Ocooch and Sloan's are the only sources I use for ply. I have had nothing but good results from both sources. I like ocooch because in terms of shipping times I have had great results. They ship really quick.

A nice thing about apple-ply is that you don't have to finish the edges by banding or any other form of covering. The edges are tight and the center of the ply is similar to BB in that there are no gaps left behind. I agree that the expense may not justify for an average project, but may come in handy for a more special something.
