Title: Opening Up Holes
Post by: Russ C on January 12, 2012, 02:37:28 am
If your a bottom feeder then this will help. Ever notice how after you drill the holes, even after sanding the back, some of the holes are not open up enough. Next time take an xacto knife and place it in the hole a little ways and give it a light twirl. It will open up the hole and you won't fight to get the blade through.  ;)

Hmmm I use a slightly larger used blade to do that.. Yep I'm a bottom feeder... Sheila

I sometimes take an awl to do the same thing.

I recently was doing a lot of real small holes so I took the blade over to the grinder and made point on the top of the blade.  Helped a lot.

Sometimes the point of a pen/pencil or scribe/awl is all that is needed to break any fuzzy splinters off.

I keep an old blade in my top pocket and put it just in the hole and give it a few turns and away I go.  By the way what is an awl?  ???

I use a broken spiral blade and it makes the hole slightly bigger in all directions.  It is a pointy thing with teeth. :)

I use a awl also or a compass. I might need to find out what direction to go.

Suggestions....

1. Crank up the speed of your drill press!

2. Use SHARP bits!!!

3. Use a scrap of some 'harder' wood under your project.

I used an ice pick, kept the point protected by an old wine cork, I hate sticking myself when fumbling for tools, all that blood on my work is such a pain to get off.  ;D
I've used a lead pencil too but the point can break off, never tried the ball point.

Awl right now we've got it covered. LOL

I use the smallest bits possible.

I drill the hole on the front, then turn the piece over and drill it again through the bottom in the same hole.  bores it out enough for an easy fit.  easy enough anyway.

I just take a blade of the same size and top feed down and manually pull it up a couple of times - seems to clear it out for bottom feeding for me.

a lot of good suggestions here. Thanks. I was using a plastic pick from floss pick kit. I also use that to move small pieces of wood out the the way of blade.

I keep a small container of toothpicks on my table; work great to clean out holes without cutting wood and work great on teeth (sometimes to clean out wood LOL)
