Title: wildwoods grandfather clock

  hello has any body cut the grandfather clock from wildwood  i have just started it there is alot of cuting to do but is easy sawing looks like but some big parts to work with  i just cant make my mined up of what kind of wood to use for the backer  i am useing baltic birch for the fretwork if i stin the out side walnut and use a light color for the backer i am not sure if it wood look good  thought maybe you all woo have sum ideas   here is a pic off the web site it looks good like this  just to many ways to go with it

My personal option is that plywood looks cheap. On a project of that sort I would use real wood for the fretwork. I have made several smaller clocks and use real hardwood. What ever way you go best of luck with it, it likes like a great project.

I agree with Bob. Baltic birch has it's place, but this is not one of them. If you want a
walnut look, Then use solid Walnut! As for the backer, I would use the same wood as the rest of the clock.

The clock is made from 1/4" Oak and is 6 foot 4 inches tall with a little over 4000 inside cuts.
It is standing in a corner of the dinning room and people are amazed when they see it.
I used 3/4" plywood in the back, with doors in it. It comes in 3 parts. The top of each has 3/4" plwood with holes in it. The piece what fits on top has 3/4" plywood with dowls with fit in the part below of it.

I agree with the others. Solid wood, it would look better and all the same species. Mike has a great suggestion.  :)

Solid wood! Even if its a basic wood like poplar it will look 100% better than ply..

IF you are going to the trouble of cutting 4,000 holes then do the right thing and use REAL wood.

You sure are not scrimping on your time and talent so why scrimp on the wood.

I agree with the others. I just started the Wildwood Designs Worthington Wall Clock and am using solid walnut & am using maple for the 1/8' pieces. The backer board is the same as the front = walnut. If I'm going to spend that much time on a project, I want it to look the best because I need all the help that wood can give me. For the extra cost, it'll be well worth it.

Thanks for the post. I don't have the tools or the money to use hardwood. That's why I use Baltic. Birch I have plans on maken two of them maybe. Nexed one I will beable to use hardwood will post sum pics as I build it. I bout have the bottom done I thank I will stain the out side golden oak and the backer and trim pices walnut hope it looks ok or I will have to start over
