Title: Hey Russ
Post by: Rightarm on May 15, 2010, 12:30:03 pm
I picked up a piece of wood from my supplier. He told me that he picked it up in Florida, while on vacation. He called it Camphor. He had some bowls that somebody turned, on display. My wife fell in love with the smell, [to me it smells like Vicks Vapor Rub]. I'm finishing up a scrollsaw project for her, it's an angle with very fine cuts. I'm not sure this was the right wood to use for this project. It's very soft. But it does open up your sinus's when your cutting. Just wondering, being from Florida. Have you ever used this type of wood on any of your projects? Dave 8)

No I have never used Camphor wood. I know about it and it's smell. In Florida it is a category I invasive species. It takes over and kills the native plants so it is destroyed.  :o

I know that camphor is used to make ointments for sports massage, it was also used over time to reduce the heat of sexual Belgian soldiers in the army and French. I think the breathing of the dust must be very harmful! ...

I checked the list of woods that are toxic and it is not there. It is used in medicine, cooking and several other ways. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the info. I have just finished the angle out of Camphor. It was suppost to be a X-mas present for my wife last year. Oh well. Better late than never.

Hope to see you all on the live stream tonight. Dave 8)

I live in the North east corner of NSW Australia. We have a lot of Camphor here where it is also a rampant weed and on the eradication list. It is a popular wood for woodwork. I wear a mask when I scroll it just in case.

Thanks Wanda. I should have done that, and wore safety googles but I didn't. Woke up this morning and my eyes were matted shut. Dave ::)

Wow, maybe I should get some of this stuff.  My sinuses are always a mess.  Scrolling and clearing my sinuses at the same time sounds like a heck of a deal!

Ah yes ... I spoke well of dust when you breathe it! ... In medicine it is mostly used to make ointment for sports massage ... I used the Red Cross Belgium for nearly thirty years. For the army because it was put in the gift nouriture not harmful if swallowed! ...
