Title: Buy wood?
Post by: math2010 on December 06, 2011, 12:42:09 pm
Hi gang!

Where do you find wood to make intarsia. I wanted to make the christmas ornament in The decembre issue of Creative Woodwork and Crafts magazine, but there's nowhere I can find the wood they told to use. I looked at langevin & Forest (I'm in Canada) and few kind like red ceddar are practically impossible to find... Maybe I can use a different kind to make the red hat of Santa.

Also, I guess exotic wood is harder to cut then other wood?

Thanks

Mathieu

Hey Mathieu, The wood types used are always just a suggestion. Use what ever you can find. You can always paint or stain to get the desired colors.
A great place to get Intarsia wood is www.ocoochhardwoods.com. I have ordered from them many times, and have always received good service and just what I needed.

you might even use other woods or work with stain. Try to make it "your style".

Salut Mathieu

Langevin has bloodwood  which I use often for the red in my own intarsia projects. It is a harder wood but cuts nicely if you go slowly.

Hope this helps

Brian

Hello Mathieu. Bloodwood is usually a deep red but it ages down to a rich brown similar to walnut. I usually use purpleheart for my Santa's. It isn't really red but it isn't to expensive and gets the job done nicely.. I buy my wood from ocooch. And generally never use the actual wood stated in project plans. I always use What I have on hand.

The sites looks great... The problem in Canada, it's when the sellers are in USA and they ship with UPS, the Brokerage Fees are BIG!!! Sometimes, it's the price of the order...

Mathieu
........................Red cedar is available in building supply  stores in 1/2" thickness. It is used to line closets. All packaged up  in cardboard.  I buy cedar by the truckload in the form of 1" x 8" x 8' rough and resaw it to the thickness I want.  I use a lot of it to make small boxes and trunks.
