Title: Ornament as window hanger
Post by: tux_linux on November 24, 2011, 04:31:30 pm
Hey!

I made this ornament (http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/11/christmas-ornament-with-deer-scene.html) as a window hanger - looks to good to be small!

size is ~8".

cut from fine birch ply 2mm (3/32" - somewhere in between 1/16 and 1/8).
The ply is a really good one with 7 layers(!). Expensive material but totally worth it.

Beautiful.  I love hanging ornaments in the windows.  I have them hanging all over my curtains also.

Nice job Torsten!  You would have really had us going if you did not tell us the size.

looks awesome!!

they only sell 3mm over here. (most poplar) never heard of 2mm, sounds great to make really small stuff.

which company did you buy this?
maybe they have a shop just over the border so I can go there.....

Marcel, I get it at Praktiker (http://www.praktiker-markt.de) - a home store! They recently have taken it into sale. And they actually have developed quite well.

The 2mm birch ply is a really fine one designed for model craft air planes: webshop selling this aircraft plywood (http://www.wicksaircraft.com/catalog/product_cat.php/subid=8614/index.html?PHPSESSID=4fed4a9a5758207f551ab9bdb9550610)
You can get it from 0.4mm(1/64" - 3 layers!) up to 18mm(3/4" - 24 layers!). It comes in best quality, no faulty spots or so.
Not cheap at all, but great to work with. I'm paying around 34Euro/per meter for the 2mm ply.
The items sell well, so it's worth it.

thanks Torsten,

There is a Praktiker in Kleve, only 50 Km away, will go plan to go there. probably next month.
Will go to the "Weihnachtsmarkt" (Christmas fair) in Germany anyway so maybe on the same run.
do you know if the sell fireworks there as well?
most times we go for "Silvester" (new years eve) for some good old German firework. 8)

yeap! Without knowing that home store I can definitely say YES.
No shop refuses to sell fireworks. Not even do all home stores sell them but much more shops.

To the ply: check the 2mm ply. I have tried the 1mm and 1.5mm ply also, but the 2mm is much more stable to cut when it comes to fine details.
You can stack cut up to 8 layers of that 2mm ply (blade #3)

Those are selling fine Heiko! Go for some.
I will also do 2-3 more and do similar ones. I sell them for 10Euro, which is quite good.
