Hi All
quick question for ya all. been using UR#5 FD blades for awhile now but not sure if i'm putting them in my scrollsaw backwards or not. i haven't had to many issues cutting just curious what is the proper way to put the blades. the one's i ordered from Mike as an dent in one of the flat end's of the blade is that the top or the bottom end???
-
Yes the dent or mark is in the top of the blade. 8)
-
with the UR I use the bend end at the top.
when cutting straight lines the wood has to go on an angle to the left to keep on track.
I have the feeling that when turning it upside down (bend part down) I don't go to left but to the right.
the problem is that the UR blades are so good that they hardly go of track....
-
It says right on the label!
-
...there is a dent? :o ::) ;D
serious, hold the blade against your light. You'll find some teeth on one end facing the different direction. that's the bottom end.
-
OK yes the "dent" is the top for the lower numbered blades but the #7 & #9's have the "dent" on the blade bottoms.
Yes dgman - the package label tells you. Brian
-
Brian,
With all the UR blades the marking is the top.

Torsten,
The UR blades has two teeth down and one up along the whole blade.

A simple test I use on those without the dent.
Grasp one end and gently pull it between thumb and forefinger of your other hand, if it slides pretty easy switch ends, one direction will GRAB your skin much more than the other and should be installed with them pointing down. Works for me!
Or break out your magnifying glass! LOL

I do it just like Gabby does, especially on spiral blades. Just run your finger down the blade lightly and you can feel which way the teeth are pointing.

I just run my fingers over the end and feel for the dent. The dent is one of the features that make the FD blades top-notch. Hey, maybe it's not a dent at the top, but a notch. :D
-
Some don't have the dent, hence the test!

FD Mike
oh, ok, I was thinking of SR blades...ups.
-
Thank goodness all the New Ultra Reverse blades Mike sent me have the dent at the top
To my fat little over worked and worn out fingers with these blades its very hard to feel the difference between up or down... (although I can see the 2 down and 1 up using the magnifier glass)
I do wish I had delicate and sensitive fingers like Gabby :-*

LOL, hahaha.... :D ;D :D

I followed your advice Rog and gripped the blade very firmly between thumb and forefinger,
I used pliers to hold the blade and pulled it out.. but there is blood either way :(
Maybe thats because there are teeth facing in both directions, I did try measuring the amount of blood on either direction.. but it was very difficult and I have now run out of kitchen towel.
I don't think it was a very good suggestion as I tried it several times and now my bandaged fingers look like I can get a part in a mummy film.
::)
-
Dave, that was funny ... thanks for giving me a laugh this morning ....
-
@Dave, LMBO :D :D :D
-
Well Dave, I didn't say it was the BEST way to find out about which way the teeth ran. I just suggested that it was ONE way! ::)
Thanks for trying anyway, I own shares of stock in the Band-Aid company and it sure helps me. ;D

Indeed so.. I'm glad you now agree
When Mike put that the dent is at the top in the instructions he was telling the truth :P

It's twew. ;D
But not all blades are marked that way not even FD blades.

Hi Gabby
Not all blades are Flying Dutchman - New Ultra Reverse :P
-
grip the blade with your thumb and index finger and pull up really fast but make sure you have 911 on standby..
going to be a bloody mess

I may be making things to simple but the cotton from pill bottles go to the work shop. Most of the blades I use are very small and I have found that when you slide a small piece of cotton down the blade it will catch on the blade not pointing in the direction of the slide. But I know that is way to easy.
-
Good Idea with the cotton! I hadn't thought of that. I love this site!
