Title: Winchester Rifle a la Steve Good
Post by: baggetta on September 22, 2011, 06:35:50 pm
Took a break from puzzle designing today and decided to give Steve Good's nice project, the Winchester Rifle a try. Thought you might like to see it. He posted this on his blog a couple of days ago and I've been meaning to give it a try. It wasn't difficult to cut once I got hold of 1/4" wood. I used poplar for the rifle base, poplar dowels for the barrels, and touched it up with some walnut pieces. It's unfinished here, but I plan on dipping the pieces in mineral oil and then shellacking the works. The stand was made from some red oak I had laying around. If I get a chance I'm going to try one in walnut.

Fantastic job!
I just cut one of those today out of some cherry wood. I still have allot of sanding to do and I think that I will use BLO for a finish on it.
I did have the 1/4" wood but, now I wish I had used 1/8" thick wood for the outer sides because I'm trying to round off and thin the stock down with a hand sander and knives for a more realistic look.

very nice. I bet lots of boys have thought about that one...

@Roger
You probably have a Dremel - get yourself a router table for that machine. You'll get the job done faster and get so much more possibilities to work.

For some reason I can't get GIF images to open, keep getting an eror message. Any chance you could post it as a JPG image, no problems with them.
Thanks,
Gabby

Well, Gabby, I have to make the files small for this forum, for some reason, so I usually use .gif.  I reduced the jpg to small size and resolution, so see how it looks here.

Thanks Al That works just fine, I also got the GIF image to open with Paint.NET had to save it first then use "Open With" to find a program that would do it.
I like the look but thought it would look more realistic if the stock were a more rounded profile like a real gun. It would take some careful sanding on a power sander.
I have several friends that are into firearms that would probably like to have one!

Well, I finally got my Winchester done. I made two of them. One is all wood, cherry and the barrel is oak dowel, and the other is cherry with aluminum barrel and trim.
