Title: Garden Gnome request
Post by: Gabby on August 13, 2011, 02:01:37 pm
Chachi
Here is the photo of our Garden Gnome to give you an idea what I'm looking for. He is made of terracotta and is about 2 feet high. Of course the pattern doesn't have to be that big, I can size it to what ever I want. As you can see he is more realistic than the Travelocity gnome which looks more like a cartoon.
Thanks,
Gabby
dumped the photo poor quality.

That's cute Torsten, but I don't think I would call it "Classy".
Not QUITE what I'm lookin for, the wife doesn't have that sort of sense of humor. If it were just me , maybe?  ;D

Ok, then better check out for a "dwarf". That will fit the desired taste better.

I took some better photos of it today, and have been playing with it in Paint.NET
No final result yet, but perhaps I can convert it to a line drawing then modify it into a pattern. I'm slow as I'm just feeling my way along, since I don't really know what I'm doing.
I think he is a cool gnome, just a little weathered. Here he is again.

Gabby, please take a photo in front of a neutral background and post a big version. You want a picture pattern right?

I'm looking to make it as a typical cut out with backer board.
I shot it where I did because I wanted the shadow lines. Bright daylight this afternoon with good sun angle.
I can easily erase the background.
I could try it again later today as it is 1:10 AM.  ;D

Gabby...a slightly overcast sky with 'fill flash' will yield a better picture and use a neutral background.
Direct sun causes too many 'harsh' shadows.
I used to work with a wedding photographer.

Gabby, just want to point out that in this photo you can not see any details of the eyes, just shadows which come out looking like weird holes in the patter. If that is the effect you are looking for then that's fine, if you want a pattern where you can distinguish the eyes then this photo should be taken inside. The rest of the photo is fine. When making patterns, shadows can be troublesome.

Bob

I would like to give it an attempt, but just don't have the time today.

That's really funny, I like the idea, but I've got a full almost white beard.
This is fun, I'm glad the subject came up.

I really wasn't trying to show the eye detail, the shaded effect was what I was looking for. It lends something to the picture. Maybe a bit of mystery or menace, not sure exactly how to describe it. Character in any event.
I like hearing all the suggestions, I can take a couple shots with the flash and see if I like them.
Digital cameras are great for that no film costs.
GB I've used overcast days to good effect especially if I want to avoid glare and the colors and detail came out great, the light was strong enough that on "Auto" the flash didn't fire. Right now we're experiencing full sunshine, wait a couple months and it will be gone till next year. LOL
Thanks for the input guys!
